Thinking of finally getting a helmet .
The things that put me off in the past are mainly that of the fit/size.Most appear to be more of an after thought, though I'm sure that isn't the case.I want something that's a good fit and doesn't appear perched on top of the head like some styles.Good ventilation is a must, as is comfort for use on commutes and long weekend rides. I don't mind paying for good quality.

The specialized 2D helmet is nice. This years model is fairly pricy (£120) but you should be able to find a previous model for a lot less and there is no difference other than the colour schemes. Very light helmet (200g I think) which is nice on long rides and the venting is excellent. If anything I find that my head is too cold riding in the winter as the helmet does such a good job of channeling the air over my bonce.

Fit is personal but I find that mine fits perfectly. It does rather sit on top of your head though but then again, most road orientated helmets do.

    Hi
Maybe you should consider looking at the Kask K10 Race helmet as used by Team Sky. The advertising blurb says
The best fitting helmet on the market with Kask’s innovative Up’n'Down fitting system.
Helmet fits more comfortably around the head, whilst offering excellent ventilation, a beautifully finished product

The other thing to bear in mind is that, given the marginal safety benefit of wearing a helmet, Specialized are the only cycle helmet manufacturer to meet the more stringent Snell certification (over and above the CE european standard). This makes them worthy of consideration.

Hmm...Not sure if I agree with the 'marginal' part. In my (humble, of course) opinion helmets really are a bit of a no-brainer. Yes I've read the studies that say cars give cyclists with no helmet a wider berth but, seriously... Go and headbut a wall... hurts doesn't it? Ok, now do it with your helmet on... It's like magic! I'm not saying helmets provide increased safety, if you're going to come off it'll happen, but given how even minor knocks to the head can really screw you up, I'd always wear one.

    +1

Never had the opportunity to test my bike helmet, but I had a fairly hairy high speed crash on a snowboard once which resulted in a helmet all but splitting in two. General opinion from the bunch of instructors who saw it happen was that I'd have been carried off in a box without it. I got away with a headache that tbh was no worse than a well-earned hangover.

When you see what happens to a helmet in a serious crash, you'll understand what bollacks the anti-helmet mob talk.

Helmets are the one bit of bike bling that my missus questions whether I've spent enough on :-)

For the record I've got a specialised something or other, it was the cofidis team replica from about 3-4 years back. It fits my pointy head nicely, and is very adjustable so it's no bother if I put something on under it in the winter.

It's very well ventilated and also comes with a little clip in peak that is handy for keeping the rain out of your eyes, and also blocking up the bloody great front vent intake in cold weather, probably the opposite of what it was intended for.

It's all down to fit, but once you've found a brand you like, internet shopping becomes a possibility.

huuregeil's comment is a good one. The british kitemark is pretty lame and is all cheapo helmets will adhere to, I think the American ANSI standard is a bit better and Snell is top of the tree, but that's just from memory from when I bought my last one.

Giro Atmos should fit the bill.
    Smarter than the average bear.
