There is a type of underlay used for laminate flooring, its about 2-3mm thick and made from a rubbery plastic stuff, I reckon if you could get hold of some and tape it down under the bar tape in the areas you want it it would be ideal...0

I remember reading the below, that's why i wanted to know if lots of padding is good or bad.Like your bottom, the heel of your hand has two bumps, with a sort of valley between.
There are important nerves which run through this valley, and it is important to avoid excessive pressure here. One common cause of excess pressure on this "valley" is riding on the top corners of drop bars in such a way that the bar presses here.
As with saddles, the "two bump problem" can actually be exacerbated by excessive padding! If you use thick foam handlebar grips, and/or gloves with too much foam/gel padding, the "bumps" that are best able to carry weight will press through the foam, but the foam in the middle will press back at the valley. Thus, as with saddles, too much foam/gel can worsen the problem it was intended to correct!0 -
I was put onto Bontrager gel tape after being disappointed with a lot of the crap out there, very pleased, very comfy.
I would not recommend riding without gloves, the whole idea is if you coming off you have some protection as road rash is really nasty.0 -
I've never had an issue with using some pretty solid and thin bar tapes here in tractor land (Wilts/Somerset) where most roads fall off the radar of any maintenance funding.
I'm gonna go for some cushioned stuff next time though, see if i like it. I can see the reasons why people go for lots of padding. I personally prefer to have a good 'feel' of the road.0 -

I agree, I use the Cinelli Gel tape and I find it the most comfortable, I tried The Fizik and gel pads, but didn't like it, Lizard Skins I took off because it was too thin and this stuff I have had on 3 bikes and love it0 -

I used to have gel under cork tape which I thought was doing a good job. I recently bought some new bars and tape. I put the gel on and it took away the flat bits that were the selling point of the new bars! I did away with the gel, added a few bits of the old cork tape where I thought it was needed and wrapped in Microtex. Much much better. It made me realise how fat that gel stuff made my bars and it feels much much better to hold now.
The bits of cork I added were to pad out the hoods a bit to give a nice smooth and comfy finish.
The buff finish is lovely.0 -

How can it look hideous? It's put on neat. It's the same as one but slightly thicker. Extra firm padded grip is great for my big hands. In fact i think it looks better as it suits the oversized handlebars more. It could be just the Cork and not the gel version. I not familar between the two up close. The shop only stocks one kind.0 -
I've gone the whole way - and fitted a tape deck to my bars.
It's one of them expensive ones that turns the tape over at the end of the first side. I'm fitting a sound board for my whooop asss speakers too.0
