God this is frying the life out of me. I bought a 5 led bike light off ebay for under a tenner on someones recommendation of it being as good as some of the bike lights that have been reviewed on here for £20.

I've used it once on a 10 miler the other day and I was scared for my safety as I couldn't see a thing. I've got a £20 Wiggle voucher and I'm totally confused as to what to get, I just want something that's bright and doesn;t exceed £40.

Has anyone got any suggestions as it's hard to tell when they don't post field test images of the lights so I cannot see what they're like.

What sort of roads are you riding on? If unlit lanes, you may struggle for £40, although the P7 from deal extreme gets good reviews
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

I use one of these on an unlit road

Its pretty bright but I must say I would only ride at night on an unlit road with one of these if I knew the road well and wasn't on a fast training ride. Other than that I'm really pleased with it and might buy another to run alongside it so I can ride on unfamiliar roads.

ps I got mine for £32.99 from CRC last year

spend £65 and get the Hope Vision 1 from Ribble. Anything cheaper is too much of a compromise, based on the lights I've used.

good enough for dark mtbing the other day. Not that far off my usual Vision 2 actually.

Not that light (?) but more robust than placky lights.

Thanks for the response fellas and sorry I haven't been back here sooner but I was away for the weekend.

I would love a light that I can both road and mountain bike with. Is the hope vision 1 definitely the way forward? Is there anything a little cheaper out there?

    Dealextreme.
I got a p7 torch, mounts for helmet, charger, UK plug converter and 2 batteries for £35-£40.
Use on flash in built up areas and full power down unlit country lanes.
For the price it is excellent.
If you want power and cheapness it is one of the best chooses.
The batteries last about an hour on full power.
Ribble have some good prices at the moment and I have only heard good comments about Hope customer service, where as dealextreme is in hong kong so can take weeks to deliver.

Have a look at the magicshine - same workings as the P7, but with a bigger battery pack and gives you three hours of brightness. There is someone selling them in the UK i believe.
  • Deal extreme P7 torch here.Great light for the money.Out performs the Hope Vision 1.In fact it is similar to the Hope Vision 2 in terms of performance......... :D

Dealextreme P7 is plenty bright enough, but the downside is the fairly limited run time. I'd suggest a model with several modes to make it last longer if necessary. You've also got to allow for the cost of a couple of 18650 batteries and a charger.
The Dealextreme magicshine is a similar P7 LED with the same output, but set up as a separate 4-cell battery pack bike light, for $80 (£50) ish, all inclusive.

Either will have to be ordered from Dealextreme (or Kaidomian or Bestofferbuy). The delivery time seems to average about 3 weeks. The magicshine is available in the UK (Leddite?), but costs considerable more than from the far east.

Another option is a Fenix L2D torch (thephotonshop), 2xAA, about the same brightness as the Hope 1 but £45 ish

I went with the Hope One in the end and I'm very happy - it's exactly what I was after.

Thanks to everyone who chipped in on this one :)
