Chain cleaning device or the fluid to put in one?

  • You can get one from Probikekit for about £12, or you can get one from Merlin (with white lightning aerosol attached) for about £17

Pretty sure Halfords do one too.

Personally, I use undiluted Fenwicks with a tesco value toothbrush.

Brake cleaner works surprisingly well but it is very aggressive and can dull the plating on inexpensive chains.

I use the Park Tool Chain Gang device.

Easy to use (clip over chain, then fill the reservoir), quick and brings the chain up nice and clean.

I tend to rinse off with water and dry with paper towel, leave for a bit then lube.

I do like a sparkly chain.

Once I’m done with the chain, I usually get a bit of rag and dip in the remaining degreaser and ‘floss’ between the cassette cogs and chainrings – don’t want to waste the degreaser and theres little point running a clean chain over dirty cogs.
