Getting into a Shimano freewheel hub body...?

The "why" because it's pretty much the first thing that comes to mind - have a mate's bike here with a FWH that once locked solid about a year ago but has been running since (no "smoothly" for good reason).

I just fitted his bike with some bigger brakes and just before I mouthed "done" noticed that his rear wheel was rattling worse than a cart wheel, the bearings needed looking at.

And while looking at the bearings decided to whip the FWH off.

Will try to source one locally tomorrow but I don't have high hopes of managing.

So, till he gets round to mailordering one - and considering it's been running - I tried to open her up. With no real luck but did not try very hard, just got the innermost seal off where the little fwh bearings are, and the cap-cum-seal-seat cover on the outside, the bit that would mostly obscure the shaft bearings.

The SHAFT bearing race has two notches which seems to indicate that it has been screwed into the FWH.

I don't care much for putting too much effort in this TBH so will ask - is it easy to get any further inside the FWH? And if so, how?

Have already fed some oil past the FWH bearings and the pawls are now much smoother, then greased the bearings, will be happy with that alone but I'm the "will do if can do" type... so.... so....

They are not designed to be servicable, but they can be opened up. Are a few guides on the web.

That's cool, just as I guessed, the race unscrews. No special tool though will try see if it gives with some flatbar or similar.

Also guessing that not much more than replacing bearings reasonably possible, that is, if they are as available as normal hub bearings would be, another big ?.

Good chance that if it does collaborate with my efforts I'll just grease the bearings a bit more comprehensively and let it be.

Are there more bearings on the OUTSIDE of the FWH too, underneath the race for the SHAFT bearing, as I would expect there to be?

If there is slight play in a shimano 9spd freehub is it simply a case of tightening the hollow fixing bolt?

    nope.

if the bolt was lose you would not be riding the bike,

there is movement and some play in shimano bodies.

Follow up will probably be using a perfectly functioning FHB that came off some hubs scrapped due to bad bearing races.

Will try to use the race off the troublesome FHB as the one on the good FHB has a couple of very tiny pits, probably still good for a lot more but the wearing surfaces have also yellowed, whereas the other race looks good as new.
