Whats the difference between top swing and conventional swing?

Ahh okay, do the different options vary anyway in performance?

And just outta interest, do top lines like the XTR, carry alot more performance value compared to a middle range mech? Say alivio?

not rally it depends on which your frame works with.

alivio middle range! no bottomish of the range.

shifters make a bigger change but higher the level mech the lighter.

Will a top swing mech (Alivio) fit any frame (Engage Soul). Or am I better putting a conventional pull Acera on?

    Thanks

frame design, position of bosses tubes ......

i have no idea what the bike looks like.

if you find pictures you will most likely see which mech people have fitted.

either could fit. but it depends on the water bottle mounts as to which you need.

  • Where do the cable guides go?
Doesn`t look from the pic if there are any guides on the down tube or under the bottom bracket?
Are they along the top tube?

Thanks Nick and the cable guides are under the top tube
  • I'd go for a top pull, top swing if I were you.

Unless the frame is externally butted I dont think there is anything to lose in keeping the band as low as you can.

I have a brand new Alivio front mech top swing, or used but working fine conventional pull Acera mech.

Which one would you go for?
  • Would you rather burn your mouth on hot pizza or be stabbed in the eye with a fork?

Ideally neither; I'd use this as an opportunity to put deore or higher on my bike. In your case, I suppoooose the new Alivio one.

It's a custom build bike, I bought the Alivio one for the build - can't afford anything higher as it was a £500 build. And tbh, the Acera one on another bike one was fine, even though I only use the middle ring 90% of the time....

It will probably be upgraded at a later date, but Alivio is staying on for now.

welöl with that info you can see which type will fit best.

you could have answered your own question with ease.

then you can get a mech that you know fits. like a deore.

I wasn't asking which would work better (in a performance way), was asking if both/one would fit the frame, or if there is anything to look for etc.

The Alivio might just be a little easier to set up then. They are good mechs.
