Fix or replace?

A mate got given and old Giant XTC 950.
Great, he thought, a free bike. problem is it needs a good £300 - £400 at the LBS to get it sorted.
Needs new BB
Chain
Cassette
Front mech
Rear shock needs servicing,
pads
Front forks may need replacing etc.....
So he's going for a new GT Avalanche instead.
So the question is... will this frame have any value at all? Or is the whole thing only fit for the skip?
Is it worth advertising as 'Free to good home' for somebody wanting to swap parts over, or who has a ton of bits lying around?
Or.... what are the chances of getting serviceable parts via the classifieds... and would it be worth the time and aggro for what's basically an 8 year old bike.

Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.

You could probably do the first four for about £40.
Brake pads can be got cheap I'm sure.
Forks, maybe some second hand Toras if they really do need replacing.
Can you service the shock yourself.
The only tools needed other than general screwdriver/spanner stuff would be for the BB, so that wouldn't cost much either.0 -
So far quoted
£35 for service
£57 for cassette and chain
BB £35
Brakes: £5
Cables £25
Rear shock service £150
Plus some other items....
At the moment he's figured to cut his losses and buy new. If the bike was £150 to fix he would have gone for that but at £300 - £400 it doesn't seem worth it.
Problem is neither of us knows what to look for if we get stuff through the classifieds here . Just seems the easy option to chicken out and get new.
Just seems a shame that a fairly decent frame gets binnedCool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.

put it up on Ebay and what ever you/he gets can be added to the pot. even if it is just a tenner."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Gotta love the lbs
^ what .blitz says
Good opportunity t learn how to fix bikes. Get on CRC/Merlin/wiggle an source the parts you need cheap, get some simple tools and get at it. Only the suspension is a toughy but you could do it yourself, depend on what they are and how interested you are; 150 for shock service is bonkers though
Otherwise; flog it as nick suggests and send the proceeds on beerEverything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer
If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
 £150 for a shock service ? You can get fox shocks for just over £100 last time i checked :?:0
