Going to build a winter/training bike over the coming year. Fancy steel was looking at the viner passo and then thought why not buy british.

Goggle frame builders in uk and all seam to be 1 inch steer tubes (could be wrong) does anyone know of a british builder who make one with a 1 1/8 steer tube and compact geo?

cheers cal

As i've got very little knowledge in this area could be talking sh#t

is it because they are mostly reynolds 725 and the tubeset only comes with 1" headtubes - just a guess. Talk to Roberts, Argos, Bob Jackson, Enigma etc. Those built with Columbus tubesets will prob have 1 1/8 as would 853 reynolds.

if you're looking for cheap steel, then Planet-X Kaffenback £127 (there's one on classifieds at the moment with a 105 groupset).

All great suggestions .... I've been doing a bit of research into custom steel bikes too and I'd agree with the above and would suggest Brian Rourke too.

Do keep us all posted on what you choose ....

My 2004 Roberts is 1 1/8 head tube, and they'd have built it with a sloping top-tube if I preferred. Choose a builder who specialises in fillet-brazing, which can be used to construct frames of any shape. Lugs are not so adaptable.

My mate has just bought a Columbus Life(?) frame from Chris Marshall in Keighley which has a 1 1/8 headtube and semi compact geometry. Tis a thing of beauty, but not cheap!

For a lower budget, Reynolds 631 has 1 1/8" headtubes as that's what my bike has.

Cal_Stewart, the Passo is a gorgeous looking bike, I almost bought one, but decided on Ti...
If you do go British custom frame, at least have it sprayed the Viner Passo bronzish colour! Stunning.

Cheers all. would have to agree on the colour its mega, don't want a old man neon 80's paint job that most british steel bikes seem to have.

I have a Bob Jackson 631 oversize specially built for Winter, fillet brazed (i.e. lugless) with a 1 1/8 steerer, compact geometry and finished in pearl white. It has mudguard clearance and mudguard braze ons, chromed rear dropouts and carbon fork (with mudguard eyes). It's superb. A bit heavy, but stiff and handles really well. And you don't pay a fortune for them either. Only problem is the waiting time.

I'd really recommend them - I also think Jacko's have the bronze/orange colour you're after too.

Thing is, if you go to any UK builder, they should be able to spray the frame any colour you want.
