edited January 2010 in MTB buying advice
i currently have a fairly well specced HT which i only use on the road (waste of a good bike)-i dont want to keep the frame or forks (100mm tora 289's)
and a beloved highly modified Giant Trance which is now basically a short travel AM bike. i have been riding more DH than XC recently and i dont want to kill my Trance.

my plan is two try and exchange both these bikes or perhaps just the frames for two bikes or frames without losing much money.
this means buying 2nd hand

this is what im after, need more suggestions and advice?

1st bike: lightweight full sus that will ride nice with 120mm forks (i dont like less than 120mm up front) and anthing from 80-120 mm rear travel. this bike will be for xc and trail centre riding aswell as racing enduros, so speed is the main priority although i still want to have fun decsending on it, hence wanting 120mm forks. sorry no HT suggestions please-i have given up on them, too much vibration and parts seem to die much quicker (probably the way i ride TBH, but i dont wanna change how i ride)
something like an anthem, stumpy etc suggestion pls?

2nd bike:this is for DH and free ride but may also ride trail centres on it too, i want 6-7 inches travel with quite slack angles and can be built to under 35 lbs and stay strong
the only two bikes that i have decided i would go for so far are the: also what forks are affordable to go on these frames ???
specialized SX trail
Orange Patriot
more suggestions pls? no konas tho (weird angles, geometry and just nasty)

please help me build a list of possible bikes and advise me on the cheapest way to achieve my 2 bikes
i dont even know how to start going about this, i think i would get more money for my HT if i sold it as a bike than seperately, but i have lots of good parts on it i could put onto my next frame-hmmmmn

WIth what you have I don't think you are going to achieve your prospective bikes without significant expense.

You already have a decent bike in the Trance - why not keep it? Then sell the HT and buy a cheap sale bike form Pauls.

i bought the Trance from Pauls lol
i still love the Trance but i need more travel, slacker angles, longer front end for the DH i ride, i could keep the Trance for XC then just buy sumin for DH.
the HT has to go, i just dont use it other than on road for fitness. not sure anyone would want to buy just the frame & forks tho.

---i think your right  this could be a difficult project

Your Trance seems to fit 1st bike requirements well.

But the second - you ain't gonna take a mid range hardtail and turn into an Orange Patriot! I'd sell the whole bike - not just the frame and forks. I'd guess most the parts on it would not fit or would be usuitable for a DH type bike anyway.

Mongoose do some decent Am machines ie the Teocali. Not DH, but tough.

i was going to transfer the parts off the HT onto the Trance then the Trance bits onto the new DH rig-the bits on my Trance are pretty sturdy, would need longer forks too though.
perhas i should see how much i can get for the HT-maybe i could get 150-200£ for it, then spend 400-500 on a 2nd hand AM or free ride bike
although this is just a discussion you are actually helping me think

Just be careful though - your Trance will get heavier, and the other rig might be about the same weight in the end!
