front shifter jamming up with mud...

i have a rear mudguard that comes off the back seat (that's to say, it doesn't cover any of the bottom half of the rear wheel) and i have a rapid racer neoguard (http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... uard-29556)... but i still find that on muddy days my front shifter gets jammed up with mud and effectively stops me from being able to shift down to the smallest ring. the remedy is fairly simple but it got me wondering how people get around this problem? different mudguards or - and this wouldn't surprise me in the least - maybe there exists a little shield that you can put around it. my road bike seems to have a small piece which would appear to do this job for the kind of grit that gets picked up from the road.

thanks!
