Hi

Looking for some new calipers for my bike

looking at the planet x brand, they seem to offer two types

CNC
Forged

Swaying towards the forged (a lot cheaper and not much heavier)

Has anybody tried these forged versions ? also the picture isnt very clear on the site has anybody got any better pics, worried they might look a bit cheap compared to the CNC versions

thanks in advance

pete

They're not dual pivot either, which might mean performance degradation when compared to standard dual pivot brakes?
NapD has some, but not sure if he's tested them as they're on his good bike.

I have a pair of each of the CNCed and forged versions.

They work identically, so there's no objective reason to go for the CNC over the forged unless you are a committed weight weenie. The CNC look marginally nicer than the forged, but only if you're looking very closely. The forged are way better value.

In terms of performance I think they work well, but they are single pivot and not as easy to set up as dual pivots. I'd say the ultimate performance was very slightly inferior to your normal groupset calipers, but not much in it, nothing I'd worry about.

    Great brakes for the £s
  • Thats great thanks :D

are the pads and hardware the same on both? i've found plenty of pics of the cnc versions and they look great

Got around £70 to spend, been looking at the following

    campag veloce skeleton
    planet x forged
mavic ssc (these are on sale)

I did an emergency stop test on my tubular carbon rimmed Zipps...

    I was rather impressed...

Yes pads and shoes are the same

PS don't know if the offer's still on, but I think you get free titanium skewers with the CNC ones, so that might make the extra £50 over the forged more palatable for you....
