Help with re-adjusting riding position

I have recently had spinal surgery on my neck, and at present can't ride, but as soon as I get the all clear from the surgeon I will be back out on it!
I will only be doing road riding to start with to build up fitness and muscle strength/shock absorbtion around my neck, so have already been looking into slicks.
I am also considering changing my stem/bar to help make the inital riding more comfortable.
I am currently running a Thomson 90mm 0deg / Ritchy WCS carbon rizer.
I dont want to spend a lot of cash as it will only be until my upper body strength has returned and I can switch back to the above combo.
So should I be looking at getting a shorter/high rise stem? Bar ends? An On-One Mary bar: http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... /mary-9630
I basically need to be in the most upright position possible I guess, without making the bike twitch all over the place,
I have a thudbuster seatpost fitted to take the sting out of the fact the bike is a hardtail too, which should help with the rubbish road quality round here.
On a side note, I bought a V-Fit Mini Bike: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p ... 025226.htm yesterday - its fantastic for £30 and allows me to do a very mild leg excersise without straining my upper body and neck. My in-laws have just popped over for Sunday Lunch (both OAPs) and tried it, they have just been to Argos on their way home to get one too they are that good - highly reccomended,

right it is not often that i recommend on of these but in your case I would.

then as things get better you can using to find the "best" position for you. before buying a stem that is then right.
get better soon."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

nice spot - that looks like the perfect idea.
Why would you not usually recommend though? what are their downsides?
Which length too - 80/100/120?
If I go too short - 80, then the difference in adjustment might not make too much difference.
100 is possibly the best, although 120 would give me the best height, argh decisions decions!0 -
length Sorry can not comment.
I would be down to the bike shop with my bike so that they can work out what length is\best for your movement comfort factor.
why not.
they are great on shopping and city bikes but not really on MTBs.
but for what you want to do it is perfect."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I did wonder wether a LBS would let me go down and try a few stems to get the right position, maybe that is the best bet.
What are your thoughts on the on-one mary type bar - reckon it would be any benefit?0 -
sorry I have no experience of them.
sure someone on here has them though."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Use the stem length calculator on the forum faq. Just add in the details of your current stem and the details of the one you have in mind and it will show and tell you what the new bar position will be.Scott Genius 08, Marin Rock Springs 08, Marin Pine Mountain 890
