Anyone got a Garmin Edge 500?

Thinking of buying the Edge 500 but have seen some not so good reports about their reliability. I don't really want or need the mapping facility of the 705 series, but looking at the Edge 500 spec, it seems to suggest (from the screen shots in the manual) that you can download a route to it, and it will give you arrow type indicators of when a turn or junction is coming up, and how far it is to the next turn etc.
Has anyone used one of these for routes or is it simply a glorified bike computer?

If you want it for navigation then get the 705 (or the 605 or an Etrex Legend/Vista HCx). I'm sure you'll realise then how great a mapping GPS really is.
    More problems but still living....

I have a Edge 500 and tbh im not impressed so far. Its riddled with bugs at the moment where it is still very new, so I have had lots of problems with it. It does have potential to be really good though, and when it works properly I have been really happy with it.

I have used it for routes before (it has the same format as the Garmin Forerunner I had before it), where you upload a route onto it, and it shows you a black line on the screen which corresponds to the roads you are on. When you go off course it bleeps and tells you, so its pretty hard to go wrong.
  • Thanks for the responses. Confirmed exactly what I was thinking i.e 705 is the full monty, and although the 500 is pretty good, it is still somewhat unreliable. Have gone for a 705 today.

Mine came this morning. Tried a half mile around the block, everything seems to work, including transfer to Garmin connect. I have made a course in bike hike and downloaded it to the machine, this also appears to work.

I only have one issue so far; when I disconnect the unit from the pc, it shuts down and destroys the settings on page 2 of the display. Is this a mistake of mine or a bug?

When I initially got it, it didn't pair with my GSC-10 properly, and told me I was doing 3-4mph all the time (Im not that slow!), also I couldnt get it to change the HR zones on Garmin Connect or training centre. These fixed after I installed the software update, but then the cadence stopped working. I finally got that working the other day, and when I used the course mode for the first time, it froze 3 times in 60 miles, and completely mucked up my data for the ride.

I agree it is really good, but only when it works properly!
