What is the general consensus regarding these products?
I have nothing but trouble getting my lower legs/calfs warm in this cold weather.
After approx. 40 km they just start to get really tight and I can't get much more energy out of them.
I keep mulling over using a warming oil/lotion but keep reading contradictory reports :?

Try some - there's no harm in trying.
Any of the top brands are good - but go for the winter ones (some brands do a 'lighter' summer warm up rub).Expertly coached by http://www.vitessecyclecoaching.co.uk/

I find that by putting some on I go out feeling warm and that carries over into the ride.
I wouldn't say it improves my performance, but the warmth does improve my comfort and therefore enjoyment at this time of year.0 -

Never tried it, I just use rollers for 10/20 minutes before going out if it's very cold.0

Just get some, one of the best cycling products I ever bought. My problem is that all the stuff I can buy in the UK has diminished to mere "warming gel". I used to love the Ozone stuff, but I swear its not as hot as it used to be.
I just got some Winstons Brand from the states. Small-Batch stuff, a real cottage industry, and its fantastic. Burns stronger for longer!"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

+1 for Winstons. The CX Nuclear is outrageously good. For slightly less cold yet still chilly mornings, I still like Ozone Warming Oil.Let's close our eyes and see what happens0 -
I got the Winstons Hot, but being the great guy he is Aaron mixed me up a hot/nuclear mix (as hot as you'll ever need on the road!) To make the postage from the states worthwhile.
I put it on at 0830, it kept me going all through my 3 hour ride. Got home and discovered the rugby game I was going to kicked off at 1 not 3. Quick dash to the ground... still going at full time. Get home and in the shower, it kicks up the re burn for an hour afterwards! 1630 it finally quits. Now that's old school embrocation! I love it!"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Sadly too bloody true0 -
Real Man's embrocation - I seem to remember it's made from lard.
My grandad used to coach a football team, and if one of his players went down injured he'd rub something similar to this on - he reckoned it was so hot much they'd have to run around to relieve the burning!

I once had a pre-match piss after applying Fiery Jack. I was like Ryan Giggs, but on the right; running quick created a lovely knacker-cooling breeze!Ben
