It's being proposed - Makes sense in a way, because if you've gone all the way to Oz you may as well use it for a longer training block and races are good for that.

TDU race director Mike Turtur recently asked Peiper to withdraw the handful of international Columbia-HTC cyclists he entered into the Australian open road championships in Ballarat, and cited an understanding that the Tour Down Under had exclusive access to the riders.
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.

It makes sense to me, but I get the feeling that the TDU sees itself as the premier cycling competition in the southern hemisphere and doesn't want any other races encroaching on its territory.

I got that vibe from the link you posted the other day about LA's fee:

Tourism Minister Jane Lomax-Smith said disclosing Armstrong's fee -- speculation has ranged from $1m-$2m -- would put the Tour Down Under at risk. "There are many people who'd like to steal our major events and our sports and arts activities," she said.

"We don't want to help those people who we know are sniffing around by giving them an idea of how they're managed."

Kinda self-serving really, but it is there to make a profit just like any other business.
  • Its a inter state rivalry thing, the Vic's stole the Grand Prix from us and stuffed that up good and proper. To be honest i think it would be a good thing but they would have to change the event some what, make it a bit more like the TDU otherwise some teams just wont go because its to hard to early.
Take care of the luxuries and the necessites will take care of themselves.

    Stole it?
If you had the facilities and crowds why would they move location?
13 years ago and you lot are still bitter. Haha, Classic. Build a bridge already. :P

Some more here, including a few choice quote from Crazy Pat:

Someone should probably explain to the Australian media and politicians (hell, and Pat too) that cycling doesn't work in the same way Formula 1 does. What one race does has no effect on what other races do.
