I'm taking part in the Scope London to Paris 24 hour ride in July.

As a novice cyclist - has anyone got a great training tips for me?

Plus - if you fancy helping me, why not donate to Scope at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/teamflourish

At this time of year, try and get one weekend ride in every week. Start with a distance that is achieveable but challenging to you. ie. you are tired but not destroyed by the end. Look to build on this distance by adding 10% each ride. Eg. week 1: 20 miles, week 2: 22 miles, etc.

This will help build your endurance in manageable chucnks and get you used to long periods in the saddle.

Once the nights get lighter (or you have access to a turbo trainer) you can add some shorter, but faster rides in to your programme. This type of ride will help you get quicker, and also get used to riding on consecutive days.

Get the right kit - a decent pair of bibshorts is going to be essential for this kind of ride.

Nutrition - Once your rides start to exceed 2 hours, you will need to take food and probably energy drinks out with you. You will NOT want to bonk when out training.

Hope that is of some use?
