My impression (from forum discussions) is the Egg Beaters are high maintenance. It is fair to say when we stocked them I sold more rebuild kits than pedals

You could always consider the road equivalient of double sided entry - Speedplay pedals? They are just as easy to use as an spd, if not easier.

The answer would really depend on what sort or road cycling you are going to be doing. If it's short commutes then the MTB pedals would be fine and many people prefer them beacuae of the more useable footware. Anything longer such as sportives or long training rides you might find road specific pedals offer more support and comfort due to the stiffer soles of road shoes.

If I had to choose between the egg beaters and spds though, it would be good quality spd's for me. I tried egg beaters and whilst they were great for muddy conditions, I found them awkward to engage. The XTR's on my MTB were a massive improvement.

Speedplay Frogs are the MTB Speedplay pedal, great if a little pricey. I've got them on all 3 of my bikes and love them. Thick Flanders mud is the only thing that has ever blocked them, but as it had jammed both wheels as well it's forgiveable.

  • Time ATAC. All the benefits of the egg beater style cleat system (love it or hate it - I love it) with none of the reliability issues. So far. Unlikely I'll go back to SPD.

BR just reviewed a single sided road version aimed at 'nip down the shops in normal shoes' riders such as myself. Not cheap though...

I quite like my eggbeaters, but they are not as easy to engage as I'd imagined. Prefer my look pedals for road use. Despite the one-sided entry, they are no more difficult to clip in.
