And how is it?

Am looking at going there on Saturday. Not bothered about the mud... just wondered if the trails were clear of snow.

From what I can tell the trails are fairly clear, there was a bit of ice on the fireroads but I reckon most of that will be gone by Saturday. Might get a ride in myself Saturday morning.

See you there Jon... what do you ride?

There should be me and my lad + a mate of his.

We'll be on a silver Rockerhopper and a dark green Saracen.

  • Hi,
I rode the top half of the red route (the highest part up to Whelpstone Crag) on Wednesday night. There was a bit of snow still about just before the first set of boards and in the gully, but nothing to worry about.

Hoping to get up there myself tomorrow morning.

    Cheers.
  • i'll be the one wheezing around on a red vulcan. haven't been out in months! just looked at weather and no rain apparently. :D

Well I'm still going to tomorrow, should be at the D & P around 9:30 ish. Will be riding ...... wait for it ...... a Stumpjumper FSR (slightly battered blue 2007 Elite)

    Weather might even be OK.

Well it's rideable, apart from the trashed section at the top. The gully / rollercoaster was OK, just needed to be careful. It is muddy. Oh and watch out for black ice if it's cold, I managed to slide my 4 x 4 on the road to Tosside going in and nearly killed myself on the rock bridge on the trail up through the quarry, you have been warned.

    Aye

what he's not telling you is that I had in fact ridden to that point and on hearing an almighty scream, assumed Terry had come off big style and it was too slippery to ride. Turns out Terry had 'fallen off' the boardwalk standing up, as I came around the corner he was sitting on the boardwalk with his legs dangling off each side (probably explains the scream). After stopping I was too freaked out to continue riding

weather on Sunday was fine.... almost balmy after what we've had recently. Thought the trails were in pretty good nick considering the recent weather. Me and my lad had a real blast... did some parts of the red route.... not the boardwalk mind

And we chickened out on some steep steps in the woods. But had a really good day.

Jon... any idea when the next dig day is likely to be? Not this weekend, I hope, as I'm away. Would really like to put something back.

Only downside I can see at the moment is the parking facilities, which are gonna be a real problem unless some more space is found.

I know the steps in the woods you mean, me and Tony M built the step at the top that freaks everyone out

I thought the trails were in better nick than some have made out, with the excepion of the bit up to Whelpstone which is really trashed.

The next dig day is this weekend, on Sunday the 31st  , however there is another one planned for February the 14th as well which will be a repair day for the big gully. If you PM me your email address I'll add you to my mailing list if you want.

You're right about the carpark. Martin (the head forester) has plans to move and extend the carpark but obviously things take time and money to sort out. It's all been a bit more popular than expected. Just for info there are other carparks, you could park in the United Utilities one just on the other side of the causeway, if you come back down the road a few yards you can be on the trails in seconds via the fireroad. You can also get to the trails from the small carpark at the top of School Lane as well.
