Bit of a long shot but does anyone have any experience of riding in the Alhaurin el grande region of Spain?

I'm going out to France in june but may also be going to spain later in the year to visit friends. There seems to be a few nice hills around that area but not sure what they're like for riding. It's about 30km from Malaga.

Anyone got any idea?

  • Plenty of interesting routes from Aluhurin el Grande - don't get put off by the traffic between here and Malaga mostly dual carriageways. Go north to Alora, El Chorro, Ardales and the lakes/reservoirs of the Guadalhorce. East to Ronda via El Burgo and the Puerto del Viento. Also East into the Sierra de las Nieves. South to Marbella over Puerto de Ojen and back through Istan. To get a good idea of the standard of roads check out Google Earth they appear to have most of Spain covered now.
The more you spend - the faster you go - the less you see.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, and it's just the sort of info I was after. Are there any decent climbs around there?

The Puerto de Leon from Malaga is a great climb (and marvellous descent with sea views), or the roads just east of it around Olias.
El Torcal de Antequera to the north, just south of Antequera is also a good climb, although very windy from the southern side I've done.
Apparently there's a very steep, tough climb above Mijas to a TV mast, and that's really close top Alhaurin.
West of Ronda there are lost of great climbs of various lengths, although most not too tough. The Puerto de las Palomas is very nice.
