Pedals should I spend under or over £50?

In recent weeks I've bought a good road frame, good wheels, decent groupset, decent bars and decent saddle.

Now I need some decent pedals, can I have some recommendations.

I'll use my bike for pleasure, training and the occasional tri?

I have Look Keo Carbons on both my Summer & Winter bikes.

No complaints with them. Would set you back around £80

Speedplay zero's for me, a little bit more expensive but worth the outlay (especially if your knees aren't the best!)

I've got Time RXS Edge. You could go spend £35 more on RXS Carbon and save 1g. You'd get the same steel axle and engagement system just the composite body is 'reinforced' with carbon.

Point is, once you're clipped in, there's pretty much no difference. Save you £35 and get some nice tires or low friction cables e.t.c.

Mid range pedals will never let you down. High end pedals will never make you faster. Around £50 is the perfect budget for some good pedals. No need to go spending £100 unless they're Speedplays which appear to be the best system out there.

Eggbeaters get my vote (SL flavour for me), although opinions are mixed.

Pros: easy engagement (not single sided), light, simple to set up and maintain, used with mtb shoes means same pedals on mtb and road bike

Cons: Apparent reliabillty and durability issues (I've experienced none of either), Ti versions not cheap

+1. Can't fault them. I wouldn't hesitate in buying another pair.

And the 105 usually come even cheaper... they're virtually indistinguishable from the Ultegra. I've had two pairs of them... one per bike... they tend to last... which is the reason why they charge so much for the cleats (which do not last!)

The cheaper model Shimano 540 are less durable... I had a pair and had to replace them after about 5000 miles

The weight difference is slightly greater these days, around 16g. Agree with you though that the Edge is much better value. On close inspection of the Edges vs the Carbons I cannot see a single difference. I think they have to make the more expensive models in case someone wants to throw money at them.

Seems i was misinformed by the internet!

@blorg: It's that 'carbon' word again. Some people chuck money at that word alone. But I can see how very tempting it is

As my groupset is Ultegra SL these might be worth a punt?

It wouldn't be a perfect colour match. The SL groupset is a darker grey.

You haven't yet mentioned how much you plan to spend on shoes........if you have, say, £150 for shoes and pedals then spend as much as is needed to get something that really fits you well (SIDI Giau would be an option, can be had for about £100) then you'll still have £50 for some decent pedals like these:

    or these:

Don't spend over £150 on carbon-bodied titanium-axled pedals and then find yourself with less than £50 to buy shoes.......you WEAR shoes so they MUST be a good fit, both in terms of size and foot support. We don't WEAR pedals :P

Muztard, you suggested it could match the groupset, for a similar price, try here.

I bought some titanium axled pedals once...much more than 50 quid...but they were almost impossible to get off. Eventually the got stuck and had to be drilled out...50 quid is fine for pedals!

Sound advice PianoMan. I managed to get both Shimano shoes and Shimano pedals for 105, well under my £150 target. :D

    £66.40 - Shimano R160 Road Shoes http://www.planet-x-warehouse.co.uk/aca ... 16041.html

    £38.99 - Shimano 105 Pedals http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=22687

I have just bought the very same pair.

I did not realise they did not come with cleats. Not a majot problem (other than them costing an extra £13.25) To be fair to Parkers it does say it clearly on their site that this special proice does not include Cleats.

Anyway just about to oder the cleats, but am faced with a decision ?

    http://www.parker-international.co.uk/3 ... leats.html

    Fixed mode or floating mode?.

Im new to this and can not seem to find any info on the net about the difference and which would be best for me. ??

    Can Anyone help on this?

    Thanks

Considering new pedals myself (building up new bike.so will need a pair)
With the advent of the Keo Max 2s the previous, original version of these look to be getting offered at good prices now : wonder if it is worth going for the current version, the Max 2, or just plumping for the std Keos ?

I have just put a set of the Max 2's on my BMC, I have Keo Sprint's and Classics as well. Great pedals all of them. The only downside is the dreaded squeak but if you clean and lube them (I do the cleat as well) they stay quiet.

The Max2's were £65 del from ebay, a veritable bargain!

I think as a general rule if you don't know and are starting out better go for the ones with float. Most riders would have float.
