OK, so am thinking about whether to take the hit and get a winter bike, don't really want to take out the summer bike in this crappy weather but don't just want to be confined to riding MTB either. So am thinking of getting a winter bike, but is it better to get something winter specific or should I buy something else and just wack some mudguards on it?

I'd like something with SRAM doubletap on as thats what on my summer beast, so what are my options? Looking to spend no more than £1K

I considered the likes of Ribble, Kinesis etc winter bikes but in the end couldn't face buying a brand new bike only to ride it through sh1t. I ended up with a decent quality (531) but old steel bike with decent componentry off ebay.

A cyclocross machine with road tyres would be another option..

I got a Kinesis racelight TK with carbon fork, 105, full guards for around your budget. Ridden it through 2 winters and 1 summer. Don't yet have a burning desire to buy a summer bike. I might take off the mudguards if it looks like being dry for more than a couple of hours.
