Cable ends.

One thing that annoys me is nipples.

You clamp them, so it deforms the cable. When you need to remove your mech you need to take the nipple off so you can get the mech completely off. You try to thread it all back and one strond or something ruins it, you can't cut it off cable ruined.

Only good for a front mech from now on.

Any ways around this?

    super glue.

dont clamp as hard or quite so close to the end of the cable.

  • Totally agree with you, and when you don't have a nipple to put back on i have to put electrical tape on the end and look like a div!

Anywayi originally make the cable longer and everytime i take the cable off i recut the cable and shorten it - only a number of times you can do this though!

  • as nick said, dont clamp it too tight and i've found that you can clamp one side of the cable end cover to hold it tightly enough, can help to make sure that you twist the crimp on in the direction of the twist of the wire, But have also used Super glue on mine, and threaded some heatshrink on and looped the cable back into it, the ends are cheap on ebay or your local lbs wont charge the earth especially if you supply doghnuts/biscuits!

Very simply, (if you have the cable length and it's not too late) leave over an inch of free cable so whatever happens with the nipple, you just cut it off and have enough free length for at least 3 such removals/cuts, which I suppose is plenty?

    Apart from the above tips.

I find if you don't clamp it quite hard they come off... The other solution to leave it longer is not really possible for more than one or 2 snips on a shadow mech as it needs to be quite short otherwise you have to bend it or it hits the spokes.

I'll try some super glue and see if that holds it together...

Nice to know my post title got 'moderated' seems they thought it a bit riskay...

it was corrected as nipples are found on the end of your spokes.

I actally find 'nipples' (the things on the end of your spokes) make very good cable ends...

Don't you replace the cable if you've had to remove it? A couple of quid, might as well take the opportunity to replace it and keep everything running smoothly. The only one I leave long is the one on the remote for my Joplin as I need to undo it to take the seatpost out.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

I picked up an XTR Cable set for £5 quid in a halfords bargain bin, the guy behind the counter looked pis$sed when I bought it he clearly wanted it!

I wouldn't just replace them everytime, they are the best and are 6 quid each! what a joke of a price, but in the kit it had all the fancy cable caps, 2 of those 6 quid cables and all the SP-41 outer...

You don't normally have to replace uncoated stainless steel inners half as often as you need to replace outers, with their (wearing) inner lining. In fact I'm not sure that you ever really need to replace such an inner unless for an obvious reason such as a kink.
