Need 2 bike boxes or bags,i know bags are not going to protect as well as a box, but there well pricey. Are bags up to the job, or do i bite the bullet and get 2 boxes.

Personally, I use a CRC bike bag, c/w wheel bags.
I put a cardboard bike box inside the bag (small amount of trimming!), which I get from my LBS, along with the plastic dropout inserts. This gives a bit more protection.
I used to take my bike to Spain quite often, never had a problem.

Depends who you're flying with.

Seriously though, Polaris do a bike pod, not cheap but better than a bag. Just an aside though, as far as I know there is no bike box on the market that is fully airline proof. My OH did the Alps last year and used an old bike box that didn't lock, Addict survived no problem so maybe you don't really need to spend mega bucks?

I use a CRC (clear plastic) bag (£5). It can actually be safer than an elaborate bag or box, which will be chucked around and piled under other baggage. In the CRC bag the bike is treated as a bike, carried carefully, stood up on trolleys, etc. Plus, when touring, no problem with storing a more cumbersome arrangement.

There's a lot to be said for that, people have said that if you use bike boxes they're more likely to get stomped on by baggage handlers.

I think so, I have been pleasantly surprised that our bikes have been treated with great respect packed this way (pedals off, bars turned, rear mech removed and zip tied, no padding).

I've used Bog standard padded bags and had no probs at all with my carbon roadie bike. I do use pipe lagging (ie for standard water pipes in the house) as protector though :)
    Arrrrr I be in Devon.
