Hi I'm on the verge of buying a Garmin Edge 705 but I'm looking for a bit of advice. I've read some comments from when the Edge first came out that it is best to get the City Navigator maps on DVD rather than SD card as it's only with the DVD version that you can programme routes on your PC, which is something I would want to do.

Is this still the case as most if not all the bundles I see have the maps on SD card? Is there still better functionality with the DVD version or has this been resolved?

I've got the one with SD maps, and plan the route on mapmyride and upload.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

It's far easier to plan a route using a google maps based application, meaning that you could get away with getting just an SD card.

However I find that if you create a .gpx using a google maps based it might not always give you correct turn by turn directions. However using City Navigator and Mapsource the .gpx come out more reliable.

  • I bought Garmin City Navigator maps on DVD because I need to be able to plan rides from camp sites where internet connection is not always possible.

I've found the routing on the garmin software to be reliable, but the software doesn't include the "pictorial" OS map information which makes picking your route easier.
    I ache, therefore I am.

Not done it myself but on here http://www.velorider.co.uk/wp02/ there are instructions on how to get your SD maps on to the PC in Training Center. Scroll down to the entry on 4th Jan 2009.
