+1. I used ot love Ray French too until I realised the extent of his bias towards Saint Helens, then he was never the same."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Got to Be Bill McLaren I'm afraid.
Here was a commentator who so obviously loved the sport he commented on and his huge enthusiasm came out every time. He could genuinely paint a picture and draw you into the excitement of the match.
Huge knowledge of the game and of all the players he was commentating on and absolutely impartial - he would wax lyrical as much about a try against Scotland as for Scotland.
Also a gentleman - he was famed as a really, really nice guy and was the first non international player to be inducted into the rugby hall of fame
No contest for me afraid - Bill Mclaren #1.
Should have been Sir Bill McLaren though. Hope the SRU rename one of the stands at Murrayfield in his honour.0 -
Barry Davies. Was a big loss to the BBC and all because they wanted to get more use out of Motson (who I'd say started to lose it after the 2002 World Cup)...
"And Leeds will go mad. And they have every right to go mad"
"Lee...Interesting...Very Interesting...Look at his face...Just look at his face"
" Is Gascoigne going to have a crack?.... he is you know, Oh I say, BRILLIANT!"
"Oh, that's fairytale, that's Boy's Own stuff. But it's been that sort of night, and it's been wonderful to see"
"Italy lost because they WILL NOT LEARN!!"0 -

I like Barry Davis as I recall him asking everyone in TV land why Utd sung glory glory when its a Spurs song. " Is Gascoigne going to have a crack?.... he is you know, Oh I say, BRILLIANT!", was also great :P0 -
There never be another Frank Bough...jc0

Bill McLaren was a Master of the microphone. met him once or twice when he used to do Scottish club rugby in the 90's. In fact, we once got "over-excited" at a game down at Hawick and some blazered club official approached us and asked us to move away from the half-way line. We were about to get huffy about it, when he explained that Bill McLaren was up in the commentary box and our comments were proving a distraction.
Without a word, we moved away to give the great man the space he needed!
Otherwise, anyone remember Peter Jones doing the footy on Radio 2 (pre 5-live days)? Now that was a voice whose intonation alone got you over the turnstyles and into the ground for free!0 -
So, no one for David Duffield then? :shock:0

+1 for Sid Waddell.
Surprised no one's mentioned Bumble. The majority of the Sky cricket team are good to be fair.0 -

+ 1 for Sean Kelly
My most favourite ever has to be Stuart Hall. Whether it is Football, It's a Knockout or Ninja Warrior the guy is brilliant.......
Reporting on a Liverpool home match: "And here we are at the Coliseum, with a match of titanic proportions about to take place. Will the gladiatorial figurine of [Michael] Owen add to his mighty goals tally?"
"The thing about [Manchester] City is they possess the most loyal fans in the world. They laugh and sing and joke and carry inflatable bananas when things are going badly and they do exactly the same when things are going well."0 -

Bill McLaren for me also.
Occasionally at my local rugby club there would be a celeb who would merit a crowd of autograph hunters after the match. Without a doubt the biggest crowd i saw was for Bill and the man patiently signed everyone's piece of paper and spoke to them all individually as he wrote. A true gentlemen.A punctured bicycle

Will nature make a man of me yet ?0 -
I miss Barry Davies and Richie Benaud. I never understood the popularity of Murray Walker and John Motson, they'd both have me reaching for the volume control or put me off watching altogether.0

I'm for Bill too. He was a true professional.
Always enjoyed Brian Johnston at the cricket, and Fred Trueman was definitely better at 'the part' than Boycott.0
