Hi, hope you can help. I am looking to upgrade my current bike and would love a carbon frame. My current options are a planet x at £408 inc forks or A Ribble sportive frame and forks £520ish Would one of these win hands down for any of you? Would there be another one I am missing completely?

I am not looking to race just lose a bit of weight and enjoy riding my bike. I am upgrading purley for bling factor to be honest as even my current bike is way better than me. However the more I like to bike the more I will ride it!

Do either of the frames have a max rider weight? I couldn't see anything on either website. (I wont go for a low spoke count wheel as I understand they take more of the brunt.)

There's a very recent review of Planet X carbon frame (equipped with Ultegra groupset).

I tend to agree with the review about the frame and handling:

Frame: Strikingly compact carbon fibre with a full-carbon fibre fork is a rare sight at this comparatively modest price (8/10)
Handling: Perfect for sportives and fitness riding, though stronger riders might find the front end a little bit lively (7/10)

The frame is OK for big guys as well. I'm 191cm tall and weigh 91 kg and the frame works just fine.

Hmm, a tough choice... my vote(s)

    Planet X on performance (just)
Ribble on paintjob /Ribble name / potential resale

Have you run out of other things to buy for your current steed - wheels / groupset?

No definately not run out of things to buy, but my frame is very flexy and tbh I just have a big case of" I want" on a carbon frame. I intend to put my kit on it to begin with then upgrade as time goes by.

No other contenders out there at this price point then?
Any possible negatives on these 2 options? I am swaying slightly more towards the Ribble because of the paint job as I think the Planet X looks a little plain. I can't get a test ride on either so can't decide on most comfortable/best fit apart from peoples personal opinion and looking at the sizing charts compared to my current bike.

Get a pink Planet X, that is far from plain!! I have a black PX, and it is great, but if I ever buy a bike in the near future, it will be the pink PX, it is so nice!!

White maybe but the pink is a bit girly for a girl (odd I know) I think it would look great for a bloke though.
  • I was also looking to change my frame from alu to carbon. After reading alot of good reviews i decided to get a Planet X SL Carbon frame and fork. The service from Planet X was excellent and the frame arrived quickly. I must say the forks where very well made and light, unfortunatly i couldnt say the same for the frame. Whilst the frame was light weight i thought the finish was bellow average and it just looked cheaply made. Having never riden the frame (returned it)i cant say how good it is to ride. The finish may have been a one off and i dont want to upset planet x owners, i just wanted to give my opinion. I now have a Focus Cayo which i know weighs more but its the bike for me and the frame is of a higher manufacturing quality which is i guess down to it being mass produced.
