Hi there,
Im fairly new to road cycling. This year i am due to ride around the Italian Mountains for charity. I am a personal trainer and fairly fit. Please can you advise me on what bike to get, i dont want to spend shed loads of money but also dont want to buy a cheap bike and it falls apart half way round the mountains and have to run the remainder. Thank you for any pointers, Adam

Really need to know how much you're prepared to spend. Buying new, you should spend at least £500 to get a decent road bike. I think for example the Specialized Secteur range starts around that price. You could get something second hand for less (or better for the same amount), but you need to know what size bike you need, and really need to find a friendly roadie to have a look at any potential purchase with you.
Also budget for some decent bibshorts with a comfortable insert.0 -
if you are intending to do a lot of miles over the winter, need to factor in decent clothing, I struggled through my first winter making do with anything I had from other sports like shell trousers, running jacket etc
This winter, I've purchased decent winter tights, overshoes, jackets, baselayers, gloves etc.
Makes the world of difference, and unfortunetly you can spend as much as a basic bike on decent kit
Oh and not forget lights, but then the moonshine for 50 quid from dealextreme is a steal, did go out riding with a moonshine, Lumicycle HID and the new Lumicycle LED 4 twin, for 50quid you can't complain! Was nearly as bright as the HID at 1/3 the cost
Gearing wise... sounds like your pretty fit so wouldnt expect you would need a triple chainset up front, but maybe a compact double chainset rather than a standard. compact means smaller rings so you have easier gears. Compact up front is typically 50/34 rather than 53/39. sorry if thats patronising!0 -
It would obviously depend on your budget, but the Specialized Allez's range from £500-£800. Reliable and all round good bikes0

+1 for the Specialized allez series...
Depening on your budget, you can go for the standard which is 2300 equipped, or stick a bit more on the budget and get the Sport 18 which is a compact double and is fully sora equipped. Its a REALLY nice bike for the price tag.0
