I'm looking to buy some SealSkinz Mid Thermal Merino Waterproof socks but everywhere seems sold out, some even say discontinued.

Are they not avaliable anymore??

Do these socks actually work? Any users recommend them?

I know there can be some contrasting views on the socks and I was sceptical too untill I bought some, in fact the same ones the OP is after. I think they are brilliant, been well
and truely tested out over the last couple of weeks and have not had a wet foot yet! Would deff recommend and buy again. Only thing I would say is they can feel a little wierd fitting at first so I wear another cycling ankle sock underneath and also they are quite thick so check what room you think you have in your shoes! :)
  • One of my mates has those socks, crimbo present from his missus.

We were out last night, he rode through a very deep puddle and didn't get wet feet. They DO work. The only problem I can see is the big hole at the top of them. I'm sure if you wore them under tights or trousers they'd be fine.

yup I have a pair. I was a bit sceptical at first due to the mixed reviews but took the leap and bought a pair. I think they're great. I've been riding a lot in the recent rain and snow and they've been keeping my feet dry and warm. I don't have the thermal version but I still found them warm enough (just) in the snow.

Most bad reviews are from people saying the water comes in from the top and once in stays there. As long as you get the mid length (like me) or long length ones you're fine. I haven't had any such problems.

  • If you're going to wear Mid Thermals with Shimano shoes be sure to go 1-2 sizes up from normal.

I will give them a try then since my current shoes are comfy as hell but let in water and I can't justify the expense of buying more cycling shoes just because they are waterproof.

You can wear Sealskinz when you go "clubbing!"
The newer one's are much better than the older ones: Lighter, thinner and warmer.

Have to agree with most. They are good socks, my riding has been a joy since getting a pair. The snow, the thaw and the cold have been kept to the outside.

There was a downside though. New shoes needed as they made my shoes too tight and nearly made my toes fall off. On the upside of the downside I got a pair of Lake boots (reviewed today). they fit lovely in them.

Edit, I got mine from my local outdoor shop, Edge in Hexham due to them being cheaper and in stock. When I went to get a 2nd pair they had gone up £5.

  • If your shoes aren`t roomy get the new thinner version.
    (Called "Mid calf thin")
The older ones are bulky, and if your shoes aren`t a size too big tend to cut circulation ad you end up with colder feet than if you didn`t bother.
They do keep feet dry ,though.

Just looked on Merlins website is these ones that people are recommending as it says nothing about being waterproof
    http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/cycle-clothing/sealskinz-cycling-products/sealskinz-mid-thermal-sock.html
  • I`d get these for the reasons mentioned above:http://www.completeoutdoors.co.uk/SealSkinz-Thin-Mid-Calf-Waterproof-Socks

These are the latest version which none of the bike retailers seem to have in yet.

Yeah, they'd be waterproof. Merlin description fail, you can't find half their stock because their website index and search function are rubbish.

Shouldn't have washed them so hot then.

I love mine, not sure how many times I've use them but they're a year old and get worn most rides, so, 80, 90 times or so most likely. Still as good as they were on day one. They do let water in the top, but only once it's very wet or you're in water over the top, in which case you'd be absolutely sodden instead of just damp without them. You do need to look after them though and follow the washing instructions, like any other waterproof garment.

For this time of year, a merino inner sock makes for the best of both worlds, warm and dry, mmm.

If you have a Halfords near you try there as they are stocking them now. And as previously mentioned they do indeed work.

Aye dont wash with a conditioner, so make sure it isnt a 2 in 1 detergent like Bold.

I personally let mine drip dry but what harm can be done if you put them on a radiator exactly?

    It makes them leak.

It did mine in, anyway. Sealskinz kindly replaced them! It is clear in their care instructions:
As with washing, if SealSkinz® are subjected to temperatures over 40°C, or indeed direct heat (such as a radiator, or an iron) then they can delaminate. The best way to dry them, after washing, is to turn them inside out and dry them in the airing cupboard or drip dry overnight.
