Reading the Sean Yates vs. Armstrong thread brought back a question I've pondered watching mountain time trials. They always seem to be uphill. Have there been any mountain descent time trials? Would love to see one, especially after Cancellara's antics last year

  • There was a 8km TT down the Poggio in the 1987 Giro that Stephen Roche won...

Wasnt there a Red Bull downhill road race - somewhere in the States ? Hairpin bends and everything - I think it was a nutty MTBer who took it out.

  • Thought the winner won it on a fixie for a minute

Downhill TTs would result in a whole lot of death and pain, a TT bike would get a little twitchy at 95kph!

The 1987 Giro d'Italia featured a downhill time trial, coming off the Poggio into San Remo. A technical descent but not the most dangerous.

Generally such a type of race is spectacular and dangerous, it's not really a worthy way to find the champion of a grand tour. But amusing for the Red Bull races for example.
