edited January 2010 in MTB buying advice
I'm currently looking to buy a Helmet in the £50-£60 bracket and just wondered what peoples thoughts are on these three: Met Terra 2010 brown (£52 inc p&p), Giro Hex 2009 various colours (£45 inc p&p), Bell Variant 2010 various colours (£45 inc p&p).

If anyone owns or recommends any of the above let me know or if you recommend any others.

Cheers

  • My mates got a Giro Hex.

It looks OK and seems to have enough vents - he doesn't moan about it. It's a lot down to personal preference really.

My only advice is to check the sizes in your LBS as it's got to be comfortable.

Get the one that fits properly

Met Kaos fits my head so I bought one.

    Well vented & light.

Sorry should have mentioned I have tried the Met and the Giro both felt great but different (if that makes sense?).

The MET is £70 at my LBD so im wondering if this is the best deal?

    Hey

Do you it for £63 but we cannot match the shag out of Fudges price. Bear in mind the internet cannot let you try a helmet on... 8)

  • Want to spend £60 on a good helmet? Buy two Specialized Aligns...

Just got one at the weekend. Paid full price at shop as I wanted to try it on - 29.99! The adjustment system is great, and it's a perfect fit on my largish head. In white it looks fab and matches my white bike. After trying on lots of helmets at all price points (went into shop expecting to spend about £70) I simply could not see a reason to spend more. Suggest that when you try out the more expensive ones you also look at one of these - you might just find it works for you...

I have the Bell Variant and love it to bits. The fit is fantastic and I would actually say could not be any better (I have a big 'ead and trouble finding stuff that fits right). Looks great and I feel the protection is very good. Its great in almost every way except my noggin still gets a little hot in the summer. To get a better breeze going I need to angle my head down rather than looking straight ahead and when I stop I love to take it off to let my head breathe.

Now I may be asking too much, it may not be possible to get a helmet that doesnt make my head sweat when it is hot but I have just ordered a Specialized S-Works 2D.

Specialized helmets seem to have big scoops in the front to let in more air.

With the 2D apparently all the vents can be much bigger and the helmet is much lighter because of the Kevlar frame. Cant wait to see what it is like - felt good in the shop.

+1 for the slightly cheaper helmet. I have the Giro indicator. Blooming brilliant for the price! Provides great ventilation and is used on my daily commute as well as thrashing round the trails.

Aside from a couple more vents and maybe saving a few grams, (weightweenies says the indicator is 299g and the xen is 320g so the more expensive one is heavier??) I'm unsure what other benefits the more expensive ones will provide.... as all Helmets need to conform to the Saftey standards..? save yourself a few quid... :)

    and that is the rub.

get your head in as many as you can and buy the one that fits best.

an uncomfortable helmet, however fashionable it might be, will be no good as you will not be happy using it.

Thanks for the offer Mark but I cant really justify the extra £10. Do you do the Giro Hex?

  • I have a Bell Venture which cost £25,a Giro Hex,and a Bell Alchera road bike helmet.
To tell the truth, there`s not a great deal of difference between the cheaper and more expensive helmets,in functionality ,save for less exposed EPS,and more hardcoat surafces inside and at the back which means they are slightly less prone to picking up nics and scrapes.
Provided you find a lid that fits, the rest is as much down to personal taste.

The Hex does provide a bit more coverage, though which is good.

I managed to get my Hex for £35 before last year`s price rises, but I`m sure you can get them for around £40 if you shop around.

Edit I got mine from, thse guys who are doing them for £40 :http://www.cyclesuk.com/151-447200?gclid=COC5k4X7r58CFZ1h4wodQBWr1A

I've got a Hex, which is pretty nice for the money, surprisingly small shell. But, I always feel it sits on top of my head a bit rather than wrapping round, the protection is good but the fitting mechanism doesn't seem to envelope so well- it goes round the back of my skull not under it, so I find with a light or camera on, it moves around a bit and can be uncomfortable, not to mention spoiling my videos!. But otherwise, ace.

Just recently got a Fox Flux which is better in some ways, worse in others... The back strap goes further down the back of my head so holds it on and stable a little better. I do hate the rear spoiler, so I took it off, and the strap fitting isn't a patch on the Giro. Also, it's big, I mean, properly huge compared to a Hex or similiar. But the tradeoff is immense venting. Not perfect but very good.

There's no shortage of good helmets these days, just make sure it fits.

    +2 on the Fox Flux

She is a big one but fitting is great (I supplied rough sizes for S/M/L head measurements in one of my posts sorry don't have time to find it but you could easily if you search under my nickname) The guide worked for me as it fits great.

The Flux has a nice low rear section which will protect your lower head (sounds odd)should you ever need it, and I got mine for about £44 through Stif. Bargain!

Another vote for the Fox Flux.. I also got mine for £45 through Stif, and like Northwind, I've taken the rear spoiler off, as I didn't like it either.

It is a chunky old lid, but really well vented, and, as an added bonus, the vents make perfect mounting areas for cams/lights etc.

But, as above, try on as many as you can and get which one feels best for you!

  • i think you people should post a picture of your head in your helmet, we can call it... "your head in your helmet" :D
reason being is, my head is a size large and the specialized tactic that i bought (great looking helmet) sticks out wayyy too much at the sides and im looking for a slimer profile
    It`s changed a bit since...

I have a 2009 Hex, fits really nice, i have always found Giro's to fit me superbly, i had a gila back in 2003 and was brilliant, then went for a 661, which was too big and wide, back to giro for me it was.

Stunter ant- A troy lee does fit lovely and is the best helmet i have ever owned 2008 D2 Flames Carbon - But not really what he's after.

My mate Has a fox fulx and this is nice too, the fit seems more giro than Met to me!

I bought a new Giro Havoc from Halfords yesterday, they are £59.99 but the medium size scans through the till at £20! Great helmet at a bargain price, if medium fits you & your local Halfords has any instock.
  • Met Testagrossa from Rutland's Ebay store was reduced to £35 just before Xmas, most comfy helmet I've ever used (makes the Endura Royal Mail helmet feel appauling, so been using it for work this last week).

Not really what the original post was about
  • I was advised on here to try some helmets on before buying a bargain off the net...and I'm glad I did, as when I went to a shop only a few felt comfortable on my head shape.

Do the Oy mate test and bang yourself hard on the head, you'll soon know if it's the right shape for your head. I eventually went for a Bell Slant because after performing the Oy mate test it didn't hurt a bit.
