UKIP; dangerous and reactionary? Or the party of the future?

I see UKIP are making statements about Burkas now along the lines of "ban them!" Whilst I dont see anything wrong with it myself there surely has to be a decent reason other than "its unBritish" as they seem to be suggesting. Shouldnt we also have a right to wear what we want as individuals, providing we're clothed in publc, LOL? What next? Ban heavy metal tshirts, miniskirts, or trainers as they help muggers escape?
Well I'm white and working class and even I see this as a nonsense to gain votes
There was a guy who posted a youtube video the other week, he documents all kinds of what he calls recidivist behaviour. Its quite facinating watching, I have to admit: http://www.youtube.com/user/littlebigbrain What made me laugh was the fact a UKIP supporter went on his page to complain about his comments regarding Churchill being a liberal, iirc. A conversation ensued and it transpired that the supporter didnt realise UKIP want to abolish the human rights act (which acts as a cohesive glue to hole other legislation in place, I am told).
Thats a pretty fundemental ommission. It'd be like voting for Labour in the 70s and not knowing about the unions.
Everything I have ever read about UKIP has turned me off them. I read a fair bit their policies and manifestos last year and decided "I'll vote tory instead!!" (This is as a lifelong Labour supporter, from a family of working class and union members/shop stewards)
Anyway.. enough babbling - your views and a poll?

The binary doesn't leave much room for manourvre.
How about "UKIP - a one issue party, unlikely to survive the next 20 years in a capacity that is remotely significant" ?
They're still reactionary. That's the point of their party.Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.0 -
I don't know a great deal about them .0

Thats actually what a few of my workmates said, shortly before telling me they'd already voted for them. :shock:0 -
They are a party that seem to rely on xenophobia, they are backwards looking and want to make the UK insular.
Whist they would be dangerous with real power, I can't see them getting a look in. their politics often sound OK, but very often have some real shortcomings. take their view on Europe, a strong independent sounds good, but it's just not a realistic proposition at the moment, instead, if we actually worked with the EU, we might be able to get a better deal for ourselves. Whilst I don't like Burkas (I feel that any culture where the women feel they have to cover up to avoid the leers of men is not one I want to be a part of) I equally would not like to live in a culture where what we wore was dictated to us, I only just got out of school FFS, I don't want to go back to wearing a uniformYou live and learn. At any rate, you live0 -
