Cycling publishers

Hello,
I'm almost 30,000 words into writing a book. It's semi-autobiographical, partly travel and cycling related.

A friend recommended I approach some publishers to help with developing it and possibly getting published. So, is there anyone who knows of, works with, or has experience of companies which publish this sort of stuff? I can supply samples on request. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

  • Unsolicited manuscripts to publishers tend (with some very rare examples) to be sent back unread, there are just too many manuscripts coming in. Get yourself an agent.

The Writers' and Artists' yearbook has a listing of agencies, what they handle (i.e. fiction/non-fiction and genres within) and how to approach them. Most want a synopisis and sample chapters but they even have guidelines in the start of the W&A Yearbook about how to put this together.

Be prepared to receive rejections (from agencies before you even get to the publishers), it's never personal, it maybe that the material is not what they normally handle or don't feel it's sufficiently commercial. If you're lucky the rejection may contain some pointers, if so take note of them, they know what they are talking about.

Most of all, good luck, what you are writing might be exactly what someone in the publishing industry is looking for right now.

Try and find a local writers circle, they may proof read it for you and give good advice as where to send it. Also, don't go for any "vanity publishers" they are the ones that ask you for money for printing. Good luck
