Finally managed to get out for the first time this year yesterday morning. It was a beautiful day and the view over Llangorse Lake towards Pen-y-Fan and the Brecon Beacons with the remenants of snow on them. I got hammered on the climbs by the clubmates I went out with but it was worth it just for that one view and to have blown off the cobwebs. Shame my back went on me when I got off the bike though

I am so envious of those who have been out! I am still waiting for my first 2010 ride. It was supposed to be today but my daughter has just been diagnosed with tonsilitis today so is not going to pre-school. Another turbo session then :( (that will be 7 in 10 days  )

What were the roads like? Ours are in a bit of a mess after the snow & ice.

I managed a road ride 2 weeks ago. The main roads were clear but some of the country roads were covered in ice. Very dodgy!

Instead I have been out on my MTB in the snow and ice. A good work out fighting against the snow!

First training ride in 2 months yesterday.
Great fun, altho the endurance has really suffered. Nearly got dropped by my female friend towards the end.

Nearly dropped! By a female!!! oh the humiliation.

Stuck to what pass as main roads in that part of the country and they were fine. Mainly pot hole free, not too messy and on the big climb pretty much brand new surface. However, on my drive to the starting point I went through some back lanes where there were 2 cars on their roofs in the space of 400m and ice everywhere (which is why I suggested we avoid back roads on the ride). We are pretty lucky around here in that there a many A roads which are very quiet on a Sunday morning. Part of the ride was on the A40 but it's really just a rural road once you get into Powys!

Went out for first run of 2010 yesterday too, 40 miles. Not been on bike or turbo for over a month, after 30miles my legs were dead to any sort of shortish-sharp climbs, the few clubmates I was out with were killing me at that point!

Hope the fitness returns as quickly as it went away :D

Such a big smile on my face on Sunday morning out cycling in Cheshire solo. The sun was out and the birds were tweeting. I had a pass for 1hour 30 minutes and managed 22 miles in 1 hour 15 min going like demon. I nearly had that smile wiped off though. Gingerly cycling along a lane my front wheel slipped on black ice, on a small corner. Somehow I stayed on by doing some kind of hop with my front wheel. It was like who did that?! I think a part of my brain went 'I'm not having this ride spoilt!' Damn lucky though.

Is that the lake with the village at the bottom of it?
Something about a witch in the old history to it, too?
We took a rowing boat out there once. My father related the story, then started to rock the boat, in the middle of the lake.... Scared me sh1tless

Haven't heard of that but there is a reservoir between Brecon and Merthyr where they flooded a village and you can see the houses during drought conditions.

According to Map My Ride it was uphill for 7.5 miles to Pengenffordd, no wonder I struggled. Nothing too steep but a gradual 2 to 4%.

    but a gradual 2 to 4%.

I think you'll find some bugger has been out making all the hills bigger in the last couple of weeks, at least he has in the Cotswolds, as I found out to my cost yesterday...

...still came home smiling though

Unfortunately I didn't get to stop and take a snap but chuck some snow on the mountains and this is roughly the view I was treated to :D

I've still not been out this year. Had planned on 45 km this morning, but the car went on the fritz and I've spent all day dealing with that. Glorious weather here today as well.

I'm now reticent to check tomorrow's weather as I expect it to turn crap again before the snow closes in midweek. :(

I went out, too, yesterday, and it felt brilliant! It was my 2nd 2010 ride, having gone out on New Year's Day. Richmond Park looked beautiful, and sooooo many cyclists out! :D

Went out for a short spin yesterday, not far, just to get some air in my lungs. Dispite a few Turbo sessions, it would appear that Christmas has taken it's toll !! Weight hasn't changed, but legs felt dead and my lungs were raw !! Oh, and the roads were wet and covered in just about everything that conspires to ruin your ride !! (except sharks and tigers).

Fingers crossed for some bright, crisp, dry mornings some time soon !! :D

  • ME TOO!!!! First ride of 2010 this morning, just a breaker inner really, 12.5 miles in just over 40 minutes to blow the cobwebs away and give the new bike a second outing. Nice just to get out, been a month due to weather, Christmas and work, but it felt great. Took it a bit easy as the back roads have become potholed after all the freezing conditions and there was a fair bit of sh*t and mud about from all the water running off the fields, but it felt great to be out again and given me the motivation to crack on with this years training.
Spent nearly as long cleaning the bike afterwards (White frame!) but worth it to have it all sparkly and clean ready for the next outing.
Need to get some overshoes though, feet were numb by the time I got back, but thanks to the Mrs, or Santa, the rest of me was toasty.

  • haha chalk me up for a 2010 first also!!

Was a treble first for me though...

First ride of 2010 after nearly 2 months off the bike,
First ride of my new Raleigh U6 Avanti!
First ride clipped in with SPD's!

All in all a lovely ride with (luckily!) no clipless moments to speak of, and only the most minor teething gripes from the bike =)

  • I managed to get out yesterday for the first time this year, felt good and even though the sun was out there was still a wee bit of a cold wind so had to wear all the usual winter gear.I only got 20 miles in as I was feeling all the xmas/new year after effects!! Now i'm not going neglect my turbo trainer from now on.

Also my first ride since before christmas.
Sunny, very windy, damp roads, lots of new potholes and felt crap and did my slowest ride since I took stabilizers off bike :D

First ride since 16 Dec commute and I certainly felt it. Only 35 miles but it felt like 60 or 70. Great day though and it was fantastic just to get out on the bike again. Weather was great no great wind and bright enough, no rain. Doing the old commute tomorrow. To be a bit windy over here so should be fun - oh well better than snow and ice  Looking windy the rest of the week too and some heavy rain coming in too

Took the bike without the mudguards yesterday and now appreciate why people use them. It was filthy. So cleaned both up this evening.
  • Feeling a bit pleased with myself as yesterday was my second ride of 2010, the first being on New Years Day! I then managed to find the only bit of black ice left in South Warwickshire on the road past Arlescote on the lower slopes of Edge Hill. Not going very fast so bike basically slid out from under me. No damage done though, especially as the ice stops you getting any gravel rash.

    Cheers all.

    Pross,

In Hereford myself, & love the Brecon area 8) .

Great roads in South Wales, cycling from Hereford Westward, easy to tell when you reach Wales- roads are immaculate, haven't seen a pothole. I ride out on the A465 Abergavenny road, soon as you get to Llangua bridge, happy days :D .

When the weather improves, need to get some serious miles in for the Dragon ride, hope to pre-ride the entire route, and intend to ride through the beacons longtime!

You with the Wheelers? A group of them passed me on Sunday when I was resting my aching 'sit bones' near Crickhowell.
