on a day like today - tons of cyclists about, fair enough.. first nice day for ages. tons of walkers out with their dogs etc...great. people riding horses, taking photos of the deer...its nice to see people enjoying the park. especially this close to central london. but the fucking cars...seriously. there were trafic jams leading up to the gates...all these people cant be going to park their cars and going for a walk or whatever. they must just be driving though..for the sake of it..how generally ****ish is that? i think very.
rant over.
my fault for forgetting why i avoid the park weekends daytime.

Thats why i always try to get there early

Weekday mornings in the rush hour can be a nightmare as well. They all use the park as a "shortcut" :?

On Jan 1st i was doing a clockwise 3 lapper and was struggling up Broomfield when i saw a car start the descent of the hill then STOP to look at the bloody deer

I managed to get to RP for around 8am today and traffic was not too bad. Sh*t loads of roadies about as well, including a hot blonde that sailed past me coming down dark hill 8)

p.s new parking charges will be introduced soon so that may help
  • I live very close to Richmond Park, it’s great. It’s fantastic for cycling, walking, running, flying the kite, hundreds of uses for thousands of people. Therefore it gets busy and wouldn’t it be great if everyone appreciated that everyone else enjoyed it in their own way and showed understanding and tolerance accordingly?

Personally I now rarely ride in the park, I’ve been put off by the aggression and selfishness of some drivers.

I also now avoid driving through the park, I’ve been put off by the aggression and selfishness of some cyclists.

The trouble is, it's a convenient rat run, that can dodge horrifically busy roads. I was guilty of driving through it when I lived on Kingston Hill, because at times it could be the quickest way to Richmond. It's hard to blame people for finding the fastest route somewhere. That's why I'd support a total ban on cars in the park, because it's too attractive to abuse.

However, when I drove in the park, I kept the speed down, and away from cyclists; I consciously felt like the gatecrasher at a party. Not everybody has a conscience, as I discovered when I cycled in there.
  • It would be unfair to prevent blue badge drivers from using the park - after all, it's a public facility. I don't know the layout of Richmond Park but seeing as car parking is going to be charged sometime soon, wouldn't it be better to simply charge motorised vehicles at the park entry points and then let them park for free? It strikes me that making people pay to park will only act as a disincentive to parking so some people will be tempted to simply drive round without stopping, paying and getting some exercise. Charging for entry with exemptions for the handicapped, the elderly, bikers and pedestrians would discourage rat-runners and remove the financial disincentive to getting out of their cars.

If you took cars off the park road it would become unusable for cyclists as it filled up with walkers, joggers, dogs, prams, roller skaters, deer etc. etc.

If cars were banned, would they bother to maintain the roads?

i didnt mean to suggest that no cars should be allowed - its seems quite reasonable that you should be able to drive there, park, and enjoy it. what i find objectionable is driving through for the sake of driving through. the cars that are there to simply drive around / cut through do not belong in the park imo.

Much as I would like to be inconvenienced less by motor vehicles while cycling round the park , I remember a time many years ago , when I occasionally changed my commute by car to include a bit of the park. What a treat it was to see a bit of nature , albeit through a car window. It was the highlight of the commute and I would not want to stop others who for some reason find it necessary to travel by car , from having the same experience.

You all need to leave London and move somewhere you can enjoy your leisure time :D
  • do those who plead respect / acceptance of thoroughfare drivers in the park not see that by prettifying their commute or gaining a short cut, avoiding trafic etc they are in fact degrading other people's recreation?
the park is an open, clean, safe environment where people can get fresh air, a sence of space and enjoy the wildlife and natural habitat - its a much needed escape from the endless bussle and trafic of central london.. and to have cunts like them ruining it so they can have pleasurable views from their road clogging, fume emmiting, anti social animal / cyclist / child killer....basically bringing to the park everything people (including themselves) go to the park to avoid is basically not on as far as i am concerned.
if they want to sit on their arses and watch nature let them stay at home with attenborough.
