Which deep section wheels for a big rider.

I've done a quick search and couldn't find what I was looking for so thought I would start my own thread.

I am returning (hopefully) to racing a little this year, mainly crits, and want a pair of deep section carbon wheels for racing duties.

That seems simple enough it seems apart from the fact that I am a big guy (100kg's but will be 10kg lighter by the summer).

I preferably want clinchers as I want to be able to train a bit on the during the summer and cannot be arsed with faffing with tubs.

I was thinking maybe Mavic Cosmic Carbon SL's or Reynolds, but I don't want to spend more than about £700ish.

Any recommendations?

Cheers

JD

I'd speak to Derek at wheelsmiths.
He'll understand what you want, and tell you what's best.
Top bloke, and very highly rated on here, too.

I'm roughly the same weight as you and use Spinnergy Stealth PBO's for training and TT's.

They have hit a few pot holes and stayed 100% in true - mm perfect - so they are certainly strong enough for big riders.

I have after much searching almost decided on building my own pair of deep section carbon wheels, I want a rim depth of about 50-60mm and will use probably 24/28 spokes.

Anyone know where I can source deep section carbon rims in clincher form? I have tried Wheelsmith.co.uk but they only have tubs, and I have pretty much decided on clinchers as I also want to use them for training on.

If your looking for reasonable priced clinchers then how about these.

    http://www.fuertebici.com/shop/wheels.html

They look like Gigantex rims similar to what Wheelsmith/Planet X use.

Interesting, do you have any experience of the wheels, whats the build quality like, how do they run etc?

    Thanks

No experience of this brand myself, I have a set from Wheelsmith and very nice they are to but I bought them for racing so I'm prepared to run Tubs. I considered these as a club mate of mine knows the chap who fronts this company(based in Norwich apparently) The only issue I have heard of is lead time as not everything is kept in stock and so you might have to wait. If they are Gigantex rims then quality is excellent for the price, obviously not in the same league as Zipp or Lightweight for weight or finish but the price reflects that.
