Went for a night street ride on the Saracen last night and after about 5 mins noticed the bloody crank arm bolts had already come undone (only been on there a week!).

Is it jsut a case of getting a load of locktight on the bolts and keeping a big allen key with me to check them before each ride?

What actually makes tham come loose?

No idea, my old truvativ cranks used to do this until i got rid of them. They were crap.

then threadlock is the answer
  • Check the condition of the cranks. If they've come loose before, and/or have been ridden any distance while loose, the threads may be damaged.

just tighten them up properly and check them after the first ride.

I gave up in the end and just let the splines destroy themselves then bought a Hollowtech II crankset!

    Check.

Tightened them last night ("properly") and check again this morning after a ride and they were loose :(

Waked a load of loctite on there now so i'm hoping they'll hold!

bolts and threads look fine (new BB) i just can't tighten them any more or the bolts will round off!

    they will need tightening again.

just like the old square taper.

when i say tight i mean it.

that taper on the splines is a pain.

Yep, always take an allen key out with you, they have a habit of coming undone when you're out in the sticks.
