Wellgo V12 copies - removing axle

I have a set of Wellgo's V12 copy pedals which have done 2000+ miles with no maintenance until now. One of the pedals was starting to squeak so I unscrewed the end cap, undid the hex nut, removed the axle, cleaned & regreased the bushing and all was OK.

I thought for good measure I'd do the same to the other pedal. However I was unable to get the hex nut undone. Holding one end of the axle with the pedal spanner and unscrewing the hex nut with a socket set, I found I was able to unscrew forever without the nut moving on the axle - as if opposite ends of the axle were moving independently.

Is there a reason for this? If the axle had broken inside the pedal then surely the whole thing would fall apart? Any suggestions on how to remove the nut or should I just be getting some new pedals?
(Pedal seems to run OK for now but I'm not sure how long it will be until it starts squeaking loudly like the other one did).

Cheers

often the thread is revered on one pedal.

have you stripped the threads off now?

Yep. Had another look just now. Just discovered that for some reason the nut had a left hand thread and I'd stripped the thread off the nut trying to undo it. I eventually got the nut off. The axle is OK but it's not particularly easy to find nuts with left hand threads...

My housemate had a knackered pair of genuine V12s with decent axles, so I replaced the axle in mine with the axle from his. Weird thing is that while the axle from his is an identical shape and size to mine, it has a normal thread on the nut (on the same side of the bike). A bit odd considering they're manufactured by the same company...

  • Just done EXACTLY' the same thing, shredded!
Annoyingly, its because I bought new pair of shimano M540's, unfortunately BOTH pedals had a Left hand axle in them, so could not install them, grrr.

Anyone know where I can get a nut for a Left hand thread?
