Gritting

First time out today for 3 weeks, due to the snow having melted and it being sunny.

Flintshire county council took the opportunity this morning (once the snow had melted) to "grit".

Only they've not got any grit. I guess they thought any old brownish/sandy coloured stuff would do.

Quite a few roads had been "gritted" with gravel. But even worse, some of the quiet lanes had been "gritted" with cement! There was wet slushy cement about an inch deep. My chain rear mech and cassette got so gunked up that it nearly prevented shifting.

Does cement actually work as "grit"??

It's ok I was on my Ribble. It's the bike where components go to die anyway.

Yeah, that happens to me sometimes, but it's because my extreme power output melts the solid asphalt. 8)

First time out since New Years Day. What a feckn relief!

Some of the stuff out on the roads looked very much like animal sh1t. It was all over my tires when I came to sponge it of post-ride.

Tbh I don't see how cement would work :? .

There's some area's of road which were 'patched up' just before christmas. That new tarmac has been totally destroyed

Due to the crap weather i only managed to get back out on the bike last Monday. Here, the roads had been heavily gritted and the cycle lanes also. The bike is so dirty each day that you can barely make out the rear light and i,ve cleaned it every night this week.Wont be going out on the carbon beast for a while yet Me thinks.

Don't you have mudguards on? That usually stops the rear light getting dirty.

No Will, no mudguards or anything to stop the crap on my bike it,s just the old fashioned way. Every night i give it a wash and at the weekend a good clean and lube.Usually find that with cleaning if i leave the mud/grit to dry i can brush most of it off and then cleaning is not such a problem. I have plenty of clothing and i just wash it as required.

Thanks that's reminded me, I need to go & check my chain, I was riding in the snow the other day & put it straight in the shed, it's probably orange now!

We found some cement today on the club run, only about 100 meters but bike and shoes completely covered.

Wish we had stayed in England.

My usual route out of Sheffield (up Ringinglow Rd and over to Hathersage) is still closed. I could hardly believe it - its been weeks now since we had any proper snow and we've had several days of >0 degrees so I'm bemused as to why the council can't even clear the road.

FWIW I think the problems most councils had in keeping roads clear was due to incompetence and not being aware that you have to clear the snow with a plough before gritting. I think most just wasted grit by spreading it on deep snow, hence why there's so much lying around now.
    More problems but still living....

cement as grit ? you cannot be serious

I don't know what it was, but it wasn't cement

cement + water = grout, every car would be stuck to the road

They hadn't gritted anything other than A roads by me, I was late getting to my clubrun as there were 2 cars on their roofs in the space of 400m! Worst road conditions I've seen especially as the warmer weather the day before and a blue sky seemed to be lulling people into a false sense of security.
