Sram Red or Campag Super Record

Both are obviously very good, the Sram comes out abit lighter, the campag is £300 more expensive from LBS.
Question is, Why pay more for the campag? Is it much better quality, will it wear better, will it perform better and be any more reliable.?

What bike is it going on? That could be the big decider!

C'mon, you've been on this forum for almost two years. Have you not noticed this type of debate before? And the conclusions(or lack thereof)?

It depends on your tastes. Try both, then decide. Personally, I don't like SRAM, but there are plenty of others who do.

If you enjoy slow, vague gear shifts, flimsy parts and flexy chainsets then SRAM it is!

If you want an over-rated groupset with cheap plastic grips and parts that don't like to work with other suppliers, then Campag it is.
  • Any Campagnolo SR/record to SRAM red converts or vice versa? As usual they provide the only valuable answers

I've ridden all 3 - Campag SR, Sram Red and Dura Ace.

    For me - Sram wins.

Although I had a look at the electronic Dura Ace yesterday and it is COOL. But ££££££

Campag is pants - sold in gary's gopshop.

    Shimano I like.

    Sram I like.

I'm in the middle so far having used both. I'd be happy with ether for varying reasons.

Shimano make the best cranksets and brakes,

    Campagnolo does the best shifting.

SRAM is the best for value for money.

i read sram make the stiffest cranks out there, mine seems less flexible than shimano. nothing vague about it either.

Dura Ace cranks are those that others are judged by. Stiff rings and stiff arms.

Apparently SRAM mas some BS about the rider needing a stiffer 'sprinters' ring, did a quiet recall and some substantial redesign work.

Apparently it was a design feature - the ring folds before the chain snaps

If weight is a significant consideration - does the frame have a BB30 bottom bracket shell?
If so you could just go for SRAM force, which is almost as light as red and functionally nearly identical, and save yourself a lot of money. If not, the weight advantages of SRAM are completely canceled out, campag super record will be lighter (if you can justify the expense) and nicer too...

The BB30 thing is really something to look out for when you see comparisons of groupset weights. At one point I was toying with the idea of upgrading from chorus 10sp to either chorus 11sp or Force, and was tempted by force because of the apparent weight savings. In fact with a standard BB these groupsets are nearly identical in weight (and similarly priced). I wouldn't gain any weight savings upgrading to either, and can't justify the expense going to chorus 11sp just for the 1 extra gear and nicer shaped ergos..
