lots of ice at the moment wouldn't recomend it for couple of weeks. But on a positive note once the snow and ice has cleared we are building more trails in the quarry.

Almost unrideable atm, the snow and ice makes it hard going.

But the new stuff they have planned sounds brilliant.

Might be a bit icey, most of the snow has gone today, would have thought it'll be good by next weekend if not tomorrow.

That said, don't listen to me, listen to Tony, he is Mr Lee Quarry (doffs cap).
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

There's some issues around the bridleway link as permissions need sorting before work can commence. As I understand it about £ 500k of funding has been secured for additional stuff in Lee Quarry, new stuff in Cragg quarry, a link between the two and possibly a link over to Britannia quarry (I think).

Tony L is the one to ask, he's the driving force behind it all.

Where is the new stuff going to be in relation to the rest of the trail? And which direction is Cragg from Lee Quarry?

I went up in to the quarry today 80% ridable just watch out for ice I don't want to be picking up any bodies from the bottom of the slopes.

Hoping to start work on the trails very soon Rowan Sorrel is going to be doing the work for us. I'm meeting him up there tomorrow to assess the conditions. Hopefully the work in Lee and Cragg will be done by the end of April, weather has put us back a bit and there may still be a bit of snow on the way.

Once the trails are built I'll post some maps and suggested routes for joining the two quarries. Cragg Quarry is the quarry you ride through when doing the Mary Towneley Loop.

The bridleway link over the moors we are hoping to build is going to take a bit longer still negotiating with landowners then need to get planning permission. Hoping to get it built by september/october this will form a good link in to the pennine bridleway.

We are also planning some trails in Facit Quarry quite a dense larch plantation on a steep exquarry site. Will add an interesting twist to whats available. Again hoping to get that built around september/october but still need planning permission.

Nope, just suspended due the snow, still ice on the fireroads yesterday. Actually been planning the next dig days tongiht. Probably going to be one on the 31st continuing on the log rides and the repair day for Hully Gully is now likely to be on the 14 th of February.

New stuff is also currently being planned.

Be good if there is a volunteer group for Lee Quarry as it's practically on my doorstep.

Thanks Stumpy, I was beginning to think you were all digging merrily away without me (recurring nightmare)... but all that sounds great.

I'd be happy to help out at Lee Quarry and at Gisburn.

  • Hi guys,

I rode at the quarry last sunday 17th Jan. You can see from my video that there are still patches of snow. We managed to ride about 50% of the trail. Still good fun since the snow has stopped me for a month now!!

I had a ride up to Lee Quarry yesterday and it's mainly rideable now
only a couple of patches of snow and ice left now.

The volunteer group sounds like a good idea,i'd be happy to help as it's
only a couple of miles from where i live.

Getting a volunteer group together to work on Lee Quarry and the surrounding trails would be very useful for me. Getting the funding together to look after trails is much harder than getting funding to build them.

What I'm hoping to do is arrange a training day, (bbq with bikes along etc) with Rowan and his guys who are building the trails. The idea would be to give some basic training in trail construction and design and use it as a way of kick starting a volunteer group, could use it as a way of previewing the new build in Lee and Cragg once we have it in place.

Also plan to run a skills training day looking at how to ride the new features, again the plan is to get Rowan and the guys working for him to show us how the trails should be ridden! Also we shall get Craig from Ride On out to help with the riding skills side of things but also to go over bike set up etc with any one who wants it.

Some time in April for these I'll post some dates and more information once we have it. Also pop in to Ride on for a chat as they will be up to date with whats going on.

sent you a PM, got a bit of experience of trail building, built a yard or two at Gisburn.

What you're doing is fantastic, really appreciate your commitment.

Good to hear there are a few people interested in dig days at Lee Quarry, I'll post more information and e-mail everyone who sends me their contact details once we have set some dates.

I'm looking at the possibility of getting people who has been building trails at Gisburn and Healey Nab along as well to share experience etc

Should end up being a good day, hope to get Rowan Sorrell, Rob Breakwell, Ed (Great Rock) and Craig (Ride On) involved lots of trail building and bike skills between that lot. We should all learn something and have a bit of fun at the same time.
