Newbie help with choosing a bike

Hello,
I dont know too much about cycling but am looking into getting a new bike within the next few months. I am thinking of going down the fixie route as I have heard they are better for fitness and seem to be the trend atm. However are fixed gear bikes only really suitable for roads? I will be using my bike to ride to work everyday which is a road/footpath journey. But I also want to use it to ride of off-road paths, around paths in parks and other arable type lands. I wouldnt want to use it on massively rocky terrain or anything too harsh but I definitely wouldnt want to be restricted to just road use.
I have been advised maybe a hybrid or cyclo cross bike would be better for this?
What do you all think?
My budget is around the £300- 400 mark, possibly going up to £500 if I am very happy.
Any suggestions for bikes that fall into this price range?
Thank you very much in advance

Don't get a fixie, unless you like pushing your bike alot - fixies are for trendy art students and couriers only. Fine if you're either in no hurry to get anywhere, or are already super-fit.
For the type of riding you want to do, a cyclo-cross bike would be ideal, but to get a decent CX bike on your budget would be tricky (unless 2nd hand).
A hard-tail (or rigid) MTB, or a hybrid would be better suited to your requirements & budget.
Personally, I'd go for an MTB, as it has more overall versatility.

Thanks for the reply 8)
However, I think I want to get something at least abit different than a mountain bike. I have a fairly standard mountain bike from a few years ago and although its not amazing, does that job okay.
Any other opinions?0 -
What about a singlespeed (not fixed) cross bike, like the Specialized Singlecross.
It looks like that bike may be discontinued, but there may be similar bikes available from other manufacturers; try Pearsons.0
