rumours abound that caisse are next to announce withdrawal of sponsorship. Can't find anything to confirm it yet though

They've long been interested in pulling out of the sport, it's been an on/off thing for some time now.

I thought they were off at the end of this season anyway?

I think Santander would want to see Berto there in order to invest. Not sure the bank's openness, honesty and integrity policy is best promoted to the world by Valv Pitti.

Fernando Alonso definitely wants in – I think there is a big possibility of a team picking up from that next year. Alberto is free from Astana next year anyway.

yes i am sure having AC there would be fine, he is after all transparent, has no rumoured links to blood doping circles and is always happy to denounce dopers. oh hang on......

I have a feeling it's going to be a rough year. Two of the big names having to look for new sponsors. Ouch.

But I thought you know who's return meant sponsors would be clamouring to support the sport?

They could well find a replacement. After all, isn't this the team that's gone from Reynolds to Banesto, it's been around for almost 25 years.

But if I was interested in backing a cycling team, I'd steer clear of Spain, especially one that can't seem to say adios to Valverde. A stylish rider, very shifty too. Also, don't forget that the Spanish economy is in a mess, now is not an easy time to get a sponsor.

Are the Spanish at all bothered about Valverde though?

Santander are sponsoring everybody now they'll step in surely.

Just in F1 they've got Ferrari and Mclaren and they're a personal sponsor of Pedro De La Rosa.

I'm sure a spanish team with spanish riders will be right up their street.

Not sure the state of the Spanish economy is a factor - the existing sponsor is French! I'm sure a deal will be done with Berie and Santander in due course.

Caisse are going to sponsor the French olympic team instead.

I don't expect Astana to last so it might be quite a lot of people looking for gigs soon.

I do wonder how much money Cervelo can have lying around to sponsor the team. Still quite a small company with noone to cross subsidise from (unlike BMC say)

Well, if Planet X are anything to go by, it costs around £300 max to make a carbon fibre frame in Taiwan or China, so everytime Cervelo sell a R3 for £2000+ they must be making something in the region of £700. Sell 10,000 frames a year and that adds up.

Santander is a world Bank and has it's fingers i many pies, egg fried rices, currys and paellas (north and south of the equator) so a Tour de france win may be good for business.
Not sure whether Valverde and Contador would ride together. Nice chaps but always want to be top dog.

Valverde already said last year that he wouldn't have a problem with Contador being a team-mate:

Don't forget Contador helping Valverde win the Dauphiné.
