Is there any way to load to music onto an iPod Nano without installing iTunes?

    That'd be a yes then.

Will it also allow you to get software off your Ipod that wasn't, ahem, necessarilly loaded from your i-tunes session?

There are lots. Check macupdate.com if you have a Mac. Music files are just flagged as invisible, so any utility that reveals invisible files makes it possible. Various programs just automate the process, and provide a drag-and-drop UI.

    Edit: EG iRip

Unfortunately the only MAC I have keeps the rain off.....

Still, MS will catch up with them some day. I even notice that Windows 7 now has some of the functionality MAC-OS had in the 90's!

Looks like a job for Google.

and then what happens when you do connect the iPod/iPhone up to iTunes and sync?

Does it get rid of any tracks which weren't loaded using iTunes - the same way it does if you connect the same iPod up to two different machines with different iTunes programs?

    Turn the synch off.

Thanks Bob, can you force a firmware upgrade without a sync? or install a new app without sync?

Sorry if these are numpty questions!

    Hammerite—

You just have to turn off the automatic population of the iPod with music. How to do this varies with the iPod; I guess you have an iPhone or an iPod touch, in which case, you configure it under the "Music" tab, that appears when you plug the iPod in:

    itunes.png

Choose "Selected etc", instead of "Entire music library". You can still update the OS, Apps, and anything else (general Sync) as you like.

Thanks Balthazar. I have an iPhone, and an iPod classic. The phone is for work, so I have it set up to iTunes on my work laptop - but all my music is on my PC at home. It's been a bit of a pain transferring music over to the laptop from the PC just so I can have some music on the phone!

I don't use the iPod classic to listen to music on the go, it's used for my hifi. It's all reasonably new for me though!

Hammerite— in your case, I think a 3rd Party app (ie. iRip) may be just what you need, to get music onto your work phone. Apart from that, my method for managing multiple iPods with one computer is to have a playlist in iTunes dedicated to each one; each iPod is then set to sync to its playlist. That way, I can change the playlists any time, and just apdate the changes when I sync.

afx237vi— if you have a utility that can reveal invisible files, then you can deal with songs manually. You can do that in the native Mac Finder with a little cunning, I'm sure there's a way in Windows.
