edited January 2010 in MTB workshop & tech
hi all,
i bought myself an '09 trek remedy 8 on sunday with a set of RockShox Lyrik 2-Step up front. I took it out for its first ride yesterday and had no problems, until i returned home and gave the bike a once over. when pushing on the front, the first 10-20mm of travel seems to have a funny clicking sound/feeling, almost as if there something loose inside, its not the loudest of clicks, but its certainly noticable. Also, the high speed compression adjuster wont turn at all (the blue adjuster on the right of the crown), i didnt try moving it before the ride so im unaware as to wether its ever been free to move. Something just doesnt seem right about the whole situation and im worried my forks are nackered. i thought id put it up on here before returning to the shop as its a 3 hour drive :( please shed some light on the situation.

thank you in advance

dan

the clicking is most likly the damping valves moving.

re the stuck adjuster. back to the shop with the adjust problem.

thanks for the input nick, that could well be the answer, but the clicking wasnt there before the ride, its seems to make the travel feel less 'plush'. dam it, its going to cost at least £40 in petrol to drive the bike back

MBR noticed a knocking on 2-step Lyriks fitted to a 2010 enduro demo and the 2 step stayed in the 115mm position and had to be manually pulled into full travel...a common fault.A lot of people have them converted to coil as the 08/09 have issues.
    I'd want them looked at.

thanks very much ibbo68. Iv solved the stuck adjuster problem with a bit of brute force (i was scared to turn too har and end up breaking them), but the knocking is still there, would you be able to tell me which issue mag it was mentioned in?

Jan 2010(last months)They're fitted to the 2010 Specialized Enduro expert tested. The forks are 09 models as they're 160mm and the 2010 Lyriks are 170mm IIRC.It might be worth trying to get 2010 internals for the 2-step to under warranty see if it fairs any better as all reported issues are with the 08/09 2-steps.
A mate bought some 08 Lyriks for his Reign, the 2-step failed and they replaced the 2-step with 09 internals, this too failed so he had it converted to coil.Very expensive Fork to have reliability issues  The general consensus on Forums is to convert to coil.

did he get it done under warranty with the shop he bought them from, or direct with rockshox? I've read a few things about getting the internals changed, i feel as if im being 'picky' by phoning the shop to complain about a knocking, knowing my luck il get fobbed off with some bulls**t story about it being the norm.

it has to be via the shop as that is who the warranty is with.

The warranty stuff was sorted by Rockshox via his LBS.He had to pay for the coil conversion himself(wasn't cheap)

    JEJames....oh dear.
My LBS and their aftersales service is terrible. Is it Rotherham or Sheffield? In my experience they will try to fob you off.A mates (Manitou?)Nixxon fork snapped on his Patriot 66 after about 3 months of light XC and they said it was due to abuse. It turned out it was a manufacturers fault(well documented on the web) and Manitou replaced it after he did all the phoning around etc.
Get as much info as you can on the issues via Forums etc and hit them with it.If that fails phone/email Rockshox and go down that route.

oh great, you fill me full of confidence... not lol. Its the sheffield shop, to be fair the guy who dealt with me was a sound chap, gave me his mobile number and asked me to join him and his mates on a ride some time. iv done as much digging as i can on the matter, and all problems seem to be with the 2-step part.... no mention of a knocking. i cant help but think the 1st guy to comment could be right (a valve opening) and im just being paranoid. but on the other hand i want everything to be right, i think il take the bike to my local trail (llandegla) where they have an awsome tech department and get their view on things.

just give it some use and make sure the travel adjust works.

the valves do make a light tapping noise as the oil does "gurgle" at times.

    Not all 2 steps failed.

BUT do mail/call the shop and mention/ask about the noise.

    just in case.

but i would wait till the 6 weekish service until getting it checked out, unless it does fail.

On a £750 fork i'd want it to be right also!
If it bothers you get it sorted while you have a warranty, personally any noise from a fork that expensive is a no-no IMO.

    ibbo's mate here...
I bought my bike from the LBS (09 Reign) and bought the forks from CRC.
LBS sent the forks back for me (GREAT bunch of guys at Ron Spencer cycles Warrington) got them fixed first time under warranty, but took over two weeks to get sorted...
When the warranty replacement parts failed I just thought fook it! And sent them away to get coil converted. Its easy enough to swap the internals, but I wanted back-up for what was a new fork just in case owt else failed....
Great fork now its a coil one!

your damn right there fella, when that kind of money is involved id expect them to wipe my bum without making a noise.

yeah i think thats what i'l do, give them a call just to let them know of the problem, but give the forks some more use before taking action.

TBH I cant remember... £200? But like I say its cheaper to do it yourself... (TFT will advise as to what to do and sell you the parts) I just got them to do it, in case the fork developed other issues...
