I have recently started riding again after a 10 year break My olld 1992 Stumpjjumper FS Hardtail was wrecked so I got a 2008 Rockhopper disc to get started again

The Rockhopper feels bigger than my old stumpy ..great on level and downhill but on narrow windy single tracks it feels less agile and I am sure it does not climb short steep single track climbs like my old stumpy ..it seems to lift the front wheel .I sort of get that angles and bike design has changed a lot so takes a bit of getting used to right?

I am now thinking of a full suss budget 1800 but am totally confused by the choice and all the new terminology..Having been out of touch for 10 years bike design has changed and I have been left behind

I am 45, 78 kg and like to ride general cross country trrails up and down .. no racing
Like specialised and orange as I have owned both in the past .. also like the look and simplicty of the Santa Cruz superlight and heckler

Can you point me in the right direction ?

Is the Rockhopper too big perhaps?

It might be worth trying out a few bikes before you buy anything else.

Head angles have generally got slacker over the years which improves stability at the expense of agility. I can't see the front wheel of my '96 Proflex when seated but the front wheel on my Rize is like a chopper in comparison.
  • Welcome back. I got back into mtbing 2 years ago after a good decade off. I was sooo confussed by the new fangled machines I didnt have a scooby what was what or good and bad.

Go find a shop and sit on some bikes or find a demo day near you and go try some.
