edited January 2010 in Road buying advice
Finally got round to hitting the buy button on Planet X and ended up with a Ti Sportive with Alpha Q CS25 forks for £795 - seemed like a bargain.

Now need to spec it up and need a bit of advice - have £1k coming on this years Cyclesheme so would like to stick to that (give or take a bit  )

Wheels - have PX Model B's with Ultegra cassette so will stick with those till the spring

Groupset - did fancy Chorus but seems wrong on a yank frame so 2010 SRAM Force seems the way to go (is Red worth another £350) - views?

Bars/Stem - Zipp contour and 145 stem hidden from the wife in the garage

Seat post - fancy Ti and maybe a Lynskey post - is that too much Ti? Would a carbon post make a difference to the ride quality?

Seat - have an arione (Black with white stripe so not too bad a match)

Headset - Fancy a Chris King -these any good? Prob black but grey may look ok?

Cables? - I've no idea - what's good + looks good?

Think I can do this and keep to the grand I've got -any help appreciated to stop me screwing this up

Cheers

Chris King headsets are the way forward.

The lynksey post is rather overpriced for what it is.

Cables - if you get a force gruppo, use the cables that come with that.

Rich-Ti has a Lynskey post for sale on Weight Weenies IIRC...

    see http://www.aspirevelotech.com/Merchant2 ... Code=CKNTS

    v. good prices and delivery is fine.

Personally I'd go carbon on the post but it's a close call I think.

Went Jagwire on my last set of cables - nice, work well.

    ooooohhhhhhhhhh

    Nice link

getting myself some King ti cages at that price!!! $95 for 2 is better than £44 each here!!

    SRAM red v force

2010 gruppos are so close that you'd not get £350 value in anything but bling. ONLY buy red if you want the pose vale.
Force is every bit as good, in real terms. I'd only get red for image.

(source is major groupset test in C+ recently. And, the main page here has the force review repeated. Also tried both, and can vouch for the report)

Rich-Ti has a Lynskey post for sale on Weight Weenies IIRC...

Cheers NapD - I'll register on there and have a look at the risk of another site turning me into a bigger anorak.......

    Looks good though.......

May not get the full Force group (need long reach front brake apparently but will measure for this when frame turns up) - may just buy the rest of the bits excl cassette, chain & brakes - so will need to buy cables?
  • Na, cables will come with the shifters unless otherwise stated.

I really want to try some Yokozuna Cables. £45 from Wiggle for Brake and Gear set. Apparently they're amazing. Wanna try them out the 'the forum' ??

I don't think the Lynskey post comes in 27.2, that'll cut you choices.
The rest sounds good, at that price and with the C2W discount you'll have a lot of bike for the money.

put it through as a "bike" on the form, and who will know! You just need to buy it all from one retailer.
It is a bike bar a bit of metal.....

Like Scrumple said....friendly bike shop....everyone turns a blind eye as they all get their cut, shop makes a sale, Cyclescheme take their obscene cut for doing next to nothing.

PX even tell you how to do it on their FAQs

Hmm, I was just about to get a CAAD9 as a new winter bike, but now you've got me thinking...

itssssssssssss all about riding. Not really a con as you get one lot / year to buy a bike. Your choice to spend more on the final bike.

100% agree the schemes make far too much for a cheap loan / bit of paperwork. 10% cut off the LBS price!!!

    Thats the real con.

ps I just bought a twin titanium King bottle cage pack from the US link above £60 after haggling on free postage (longer delivery time).

have a look at the USE sumo Ti post- got one on my sportive- v well made, prob not quite as flash as the lynksey but far better than the van nicholas ones

I put one on mainly cos I couldn't get a carbon post to stay put in the tube (tolerances on the dimeter maybe) without the risk of overtightening and breaking it

problem solved with the ti post and it does look quite nice

CAA9 this year, Zipps next, then SRAM Red year after that. I'll have one hell of a winter bike

My main fear is that if I get a CAAD9, I'll prefer it to my more expensive "good" bike...

Ah good point so that's Lynskey out

How about Alpha Q Prolite to match the forks - reduced to £73 at Wiggle? Noone seems to have anything bad to say about them

    Frame arrived today....stunning! :D
