Which would you go for to upgrade from a predominatley watered down tiagra groupset?

I like the looks of the rival much neater looking i think especially around the shifters, but have only used shimano stuff. also i want an upgrade for a double and make the step up from a compact.

Can get both groupsets fairly close in price http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/campagnol ... groupsets/ from here,. Just thinking about it, interested to hear peoples thoughts on the matter,

cheers, Matt.

    Rival is cheaper here: http://www.fudgescyclestore.com/index.php?p=73462 @ £420 - it's what I would buy too.

Having ridden both, I would say Rival. Looks so much better, both cables tucked away, unlike 105. Price from Fudge's is excellent and you are only going to get 105 for about £400 at best. So for £20 you get what (in my eyes) is a better looking groupset. Also Rival is lighter (although tbh you ain't gonna notice it that much) and I really like the double shift mechanism. You may not, so might want to try it out before buying if you can. I don't think that there is anything wrong with 105 at all - it is a perfectly good groupset, but I would go Rival every time - especially for £420....

    Haven't ridden Campag though tbf...
  • jeez guys quick replies! Thanks alot.

Im not a fan of campag, the thumb shift just doesnt sit with me, ive tried rival before, with the shift mech and think i would get used to it pretty quickly just have to take it steady first few times out.

Thanks for the mention of fudges never heard of that site before, and looks sweet seen as id seen a 2009 rival set for 480, and it wasnt customisable, like this.

Cheers again. given me somethign to think about.

Well, 105 can be had for approx. £350 incl. shipping here: http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k408/a2602/105-10-x-2-gruppe-ohne-naben.html?mfid=43

Also, for durability, I've heard 105 has the upper hand.

Rival is Ultegra quality - and lighter than Ultegra too. I wouldn't even consider 105 if Rival was an option....

And you know this HOW???????? :? :? :?
    Just playing devils advocate.
  • I'd go rival. +1 to the above - its more a match for last years ultegra than 105... and 105 just doesnt look nice - might get a rework soon... if you can hold on till tht prices might be cheaper :-/
    Go for the break
    Create a chaingang
Make sure you don't break your chain

because I have recently switched from Ultegra to Rival, that's how. But it's not just my opinion - a quick search of threads on similar topics will back that up, I think...

Hmmmmm, so they've 'downgraded' Veloce to Xenon level then have they and that's why they got rid of Xenon? Quite a clever marketing tactic really

just look at the difference in chainring quality between veloce and rival and the weight difference is substantial

You said the QUALITY was better. You've torn these items apart??? Had materials analyzed???? Done research on how long these items have lasted in real world use???
Looked into manufacturing methods and quality controls at these factories????
To be truthful is it "just your opinion"????? I think so. You really don't know that it's better quality.
Sorry if I'm sounding like an *sshole(and I am) but to just say you know something without any backup always gets to me.

he just maens from a usage point of view. rival seems nice and crisp changing and swift.good shaped levers. its just common opinion which is all we can go on.i like shimano too even my sora has worked trouble free for years and nearly 4k miles and all weather. i prefer rival if given the choice.

pis55 off Dennis - you know perfectly well what I mean. From a usage and riding point of view, the quality is better. I couldn't give a fck about the materials and manufacturing methods, and if you were honest, neither could you....

I know what he meant. It just gets to me when people (knowingly or unknowingly) slam a product or person for no real reason. And that really wasn't the case here. Just my overreaction.

I'll buy that. Slam was not the thing to say. I've been overreacting to things all day.
    Sorry.

from my experience of rival is light but has very poor durability(wore out after only about 8000-9000 miles) were as i have had 105 for 2.5 years and never had any issues
  • Arguments between the virtues and vices of the three major component groups aside, this latest Force iteration raises interesting questions for the fate of SRAM's flagship Red package as it offers a superb weight-to-price ratio and excellent overall performance with just a handful of minor areas of improvement.

In the meantime, Force buyers will be well served knowing they're getting nearly all of the function and performance of the top dog at a much lower price. But if you're willing to deal with another 100g or so, SRAM's value king Rival group is almost an exact replica of Force in terms of function and around £400 cheaper.

From the front page. I take it to mean there's only a baw hair's difference between the three groups. I don't think you can say the same of 105 vs Dura Ace.
