I just popped to Graffham water to have a look round the shiney bits, as i walked up to the door i saw this.
53f298d5.jpg
i had to ask what happened inside,
The story the guy who rented it told them that he was going round a berm and came off the top?
but apparently the forks arnt bent and nor are the wheels?
they recon he was trying to do some jumps on it? but surely thats more than landing wrong? i have had my fair share of bad landings or even hitting things too hard but never seen this happen?

but no bent forks or buckled wheel?!?
  •

That's the kind of damage I'd expect to see from someone just running straight into a wall or something at high speed or landing a big jump nose (completely) down.

the conspiricy side of me thought, maybe the guy had swapped all the bits off of his own bike? or something?

  • Doubt it, the shop would have the frame # recorded I would imagine. In case of theft etc.

Carrera fury cost half the price

For that price I'd expect it to be built to last ... workmanship and choice of materials comes 2nd to maximum profit nowadays

My old spesh' Fatboy BMX did that, But it was because I slipped doing grind and the bike when belly first into a concrete bollard with all my weight behind it. was not good.

  • That's the front wheel hitting something hard with almost definitely the riders weight behind it, probably off a jump or - as one of my friends found out - hitting a rock on a downhill section dead on. Very similar damage.

As a renter it may have been stressed beforehand and this last impact really "broke" it so you can't really blame substandard construction or materials. Note that the welds are OK.

Any bad landing / blunt force trauma could do that, doesn't have to be off a cliff. If the person who rode it wasn't injured then it's been taken well out of it's intended purpose range.....looking at it.

i suppose a dented tube followed by a large cack handed landing could of done it?

would say any old out of proportion hard and fast nose dive landing could do that.
  • Like what the Trek session 88 does but the trek goes in the top tube!

Thats a serious heavy landing if it was jumped and ended up like that :?

Maybe he landed front wheel to flat and back wheel on the landing, but then id expect it to go the other way and stretch out......hmmmmmmm

Depends just how nose-heavy the landing was, but I would have thought a hard landing would force the front wheel forwards, this looks like its gone the other way, as if it's just been ridden straight into a tree or something.

  • could have been dropped in the back of a pickup truck (with the front wheel and forks on the outside of the edge) - seen that happen - same sort of damage.......

i did that to the bike i learned to ride on (an old 97 p7). i rode at full pelt into an abandoned motor bike/scooter that i didnt see cause i was riding in the dark with no lights.

    bent it up good style.

my mate was not impressed when i gave it back and i paid him 605 quid to replace the frame and forks.

this happened the same day as i learned to ride the thing.

i am not expert (well i am on crashes, but that is a separate matter), but i'd say he landed it on a railing. thats a meaty smash though and as bails states, i am sure it can be "buffed" out

Looking again, the top tube has a huge crack in it just behind the headset, guessing this was the first failure due to perhaps landing with the wheels either the side of a landing for a set of doubles of something, then the bottom tube is just secondary after taking the strain from the broken top tube.
