Hello all, returned to cycling after a 15 year abscence (!) last summer. Am still using my Ribble 653 frame and have upgraded as I go. I want to replace the headset/ stem, but mine is an old fashioned conventional alloy 'L' shaped stem. I want to upgrade to a modern one, but don't know if this is possible with my frame/ forks. I know this may be a divvy question, but can someone explain all to me please!!

  • Chris King 1" NoThreadset Headset
    New 1" fork (non-threaded)
Stem (1.125" stems can be used with a shim)

You should take the opportunity to "upgrade" to oversize bars at the same time.

You need something like this. You can then use a standard A-head type stem.

FWIW I don't see oversize bars as an "upgrade". More of a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

That's why I used the inverted commas Dennis. However the future is looking increasing like 31.8mm will be the standard. Less and less of the 26/25.4mm stuff is being made.

Thanks lads. John T , that looks like a good bit of kit, think I may go for that for now. I have already bought some new bars and they fit ok in my alloy stem
