You should try living in Ireland, where the great and the worthy had their first meeting about this at the end of last week. They'll probably come to some useful conclusion around June and then pat themselves on the back as to what a great job they did 'under the circumstances'. Circumstances they don't seem to understand are theirs to manage.

Unfortunately the transport minister couldn't be present as he was on holiday in Malta at the time. His quote when he returnedwas "well this weather would have happened whether or not I was here". What an idiot. It's his response that's been the problem not the weather.

Ireland has had fairly modest falls of snow in comparison to places like Scotland and yet all of our schools are closed for a week and we're almost in a national emergency. There's people who've been without water for 2 weeks.

Scotland has closed 13 % of the schools.

It's worth picking the scab on this one. By what authority is the govt intervening in contracts between local authourities and private salt suppliers? Have they invoked the Civil Contingencies Act 2005?

I heard a representative of Sheffield City Council say on Sunday that the Salt Cell wasn't due to meet until Tuesday, and that no contact details had been issued for it. I hope that this is the the '10 version of Dennis Howell being appointed Minister for Drought and for Snow back in the 1970's, at which point the crisises promptly ended as they would've done in any case The one thing that can turn this adverse weather into a full-blown crisis is to get the govt involved in running (better make that ruining) things...
